The migration patterns of all belugas are heavily influenced by their prey. Other factors play a role, too. But especially in Cook Inlet, belugas follow the fish!

👀 Peak viewing season for Cook Inlet belugas currently tends to be mid-August through mid-October, when the largest numbers of whales can be seen daily along the most densely-populated (by humans!) nearshore areas of upper Cook Inlet (e.g. Turnagain Arm and Anchorage).

The fish they’re after? The latest runs of SALMON!

Did you know this🐟🐟🐟 is why we start seeing the whales so much nearshore this time of the year?

If recent years’ trends continue, we’ll begin seeing them daily over the next couple of weeks!

‼️Cook Inlet belugas are critically endangered. Harassment is illegal. Don’t buzz belugas with drones. Always view belugas safely and respectfully. Do not park on highway shoulders or cross railroad tracks. If in a plane, stay high (1,500 ft) and fly by. If in a boat or watercraft, stay 300 ft away and do not approach whales. Report belugas in distress or stranded whales 24/7 to NOAA Fisheries at 877-925-7773. See a map of recent sightings at www.cookinletbelugas.com.
