The Lascaux Caves are a world-famous prehistoric site located near Montignac in southwestern France, containing some of the most remarkable cave paintings ever discovered. The caves, dating back around 17,000 years to the Upper Paleolithic period, were found in 1940 by a group of boys. The artwork inside features over 600 figures, primarily animals such as bison, horses, stags, and aurochs. The detailed, vivid paintings suggest advanced artistic skills and possibly had ceremonial or symbolic meanings, likely related to hunting rituals or early religious beliefs.

Due to damage from exposure to light, humidity, and carbon dioxide from visitors, the caves were closed to the public in 1963 to preserve the artwork. In response, a replica of the caves, Lascaux II, was opened in 1983, recreating the most famous sections of the caves. In 2016, Lascaux 4, a highly advanced digital replica, was introduced, offering an interactive, 3D experience of the cave system.

The Lascaux Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for their cultural and artistic significance. They offer valuable insight into the early human experience, showcasing some of the first known instances of artistic expression and offering a direct connection to the lives of our distant ancestors.

The cathedral itself was built over several centuries, from the early 13th century to the early 14th century, making it a prime example of French Gothic architecture. Its design includes towering spires, beautiful stained glass windows, and intricate stone carvings.
