In case anyone is wondering how I feel about the zoning article! Our family property which has been commercial for nearly four centuries will be in the residential area. While I am assured I will be grandfathered, after nine or so generations on this property my concern is not my grandfather but future generations who may want to make their living off the land the way I have.
Please come to town meeting and vote it down.

Great breeze for sailing this weekend

Tom and I came up through the hawse in the US Brig NIAGARA in the 90's. All 3 employees we worked with this past year sailed in NIAGARA as well.

NIAGARA had a small professional crew and a large dedicated volunteer crew. All but the lower spars were sent aloft with the capstan. All the shrouds were set up with handy billys, no comealongs. There was only one shackle on the ship, at the throat block aloft for the spanker. She was rigged up every spring and down in the fall. we did a lot of seizings!

We did drills every time we went sailing. We always aimed to look our best, coiling the lines so they'd hang at the same height off the deck, each mast crew competing to make the prettiest furls…. We learned to complete maneuvers and rig work using hand signals only, no shouting. Captain Rybka made sure we got out in the small boats both rowing and sailing, dipping lug and sprit rigged. And we were so fortunate to have sailed with Skipper aka Arthur Kimberly!

We learned to work together with people of all ages and backgrounds and people from different parts of the world. We learned to trust ourselves and work as a team. These are not only valuable shipboard skills but valuable life skills.

We are looking forward to seeing NIAGARA and her program rebuilt.
