IdentaFly was born to answer the age old question “What in the world is actually in my fly box?” It is the first mobile app that uses image recognition AI to help you learn about the various flies and patterns that you never even knew existed. They make it easy to learn about flies based on species, shape, color, and appearance. Whether it’s a caddis or a mayfly, IdentaFly shows you the percentage chance that the detected fly is correctly identified. After the fly is scanned, a display of similar patterns and variations will appear to help you find the closest match.

Another great feature IdentaFly offers is the fishing journal, which allows you to keep track of locations you have recently fished. You can save and view these locations for later, filtering them by fly pattern or location to find the exact fishing spot you’re looking for.

The Guide Network is excited to collaborate with IdentaFly to bring you the best tools and resources for your fishing adventures. Whether you’re identifying flies with IdentaFly, or managing booking operations with The Guide Network, we aim to optimize your fly fishing experience in the easiest and most enjoyable way possible.

I grew up in a fishing family in the south east of Australia chasing ‘Ozzy natives’. In my home town it was either you played sports like ‘footy’ or cricket or you were hunting and fishing. Eventually I started skipping football training to fish more. I got into fly fishing when I moved to the ‘alpine region’ to study. I always had a fascination for fly but It wasn’t until I lived at the foot of the ‘North East Victorian’ mountains where I had access to endless trout water that I actually picked up a fly rod.
I got more into fly tying through covid lockdown. While working as a fly fishing guide at the time we lost all of work. With the bush fires on top of that it was a tough time for the tourism industry in the area. Fly tying was a way to stay sane and make a little extra money.
I guess most fly fisher’s eventually start tying their own flies but it turns out it can be a really enjoyable hobby and I’ve kept it up since. I love the creative side of it, the endless tweaking of patterns. The inspiration from other tyers on here also keeps me excited to try new things and progress.

The silent problem started with the introduction of aquatic invasive species (AIS). AIS poses a very big challenge to conservation work across the US by damaging and destroying river ecosystems and even having a negative effect on human health. This occurs when people fish multiple bodies of water, where AIS can “hitchhike” on equipment, boats, and clothing. This unintentional transport allows AIS to invade new ecosystems, where they establish themselves, often outcompeting native species and disrupting the ecological balance. Unfortunately this is not a new challenge; and with an ever growing love for the outdoors, this issue is prevalent now more than ever.

WNTI proposes a robust approach through monitoring your gear. They call to “Clean, Drain, Dry” your equipment and thoroughly remove any standing water in your boat. WNTI says drying is the most thorough method of AIS cleansing, recommending that when moving between waters to dry equipment for 5 days or more. If not properly dried, non-native species can live up to 15 days in damp conditions. Another way to fight AIS is to be conscious when selecting gear. Buying rubber sole waders instead of felt is a smart choice as rubber is easier to clean, and felt tends to trap moisture containing unwanted microorganisms and AIS. Live bait disposal is another important factor, WNTI recommends proper disposal in the trash or immediate reuse. Disposing non native live bait in the waters you fish can have serious negative impacts on the ecosystem.

My mother bought me my first fly rod when I was 11. She would always take me to creeks down in Erie, PA. There were a lot of days where I would get nothing and wanted to give up, but she always reassured me that next time I would get one. She passed when I was 13. I’m currently 19 and fly fishing was my only peace at the time. My grandparents would take me out fishing and tell random people walking “watch that kid he’s going to catch a fish!”. They really believed I was the best fisherman ever catching a bunch of bluegills haha. Fast forward to when I bought my first car. I would go into the woods alone and make the most in depth connections to life and God. Now I go to the same woods and think of my mom and my grandparents because without them I know I would have never kept fishing.

“As a kid I enjoyed artwork, and being by the mountain stream up the canyon. Those two didn’t have much in common until I got into fly fishing and tying. I didn’t come from a fishing background, but I was ‘hooked’ from the moment I saw my childhood friend catch a Bonneville cutthroat off a high mountain lake. The places I fished were blue ribbon fisheries that saw anglers every day. This pushed me to show the fish flies they weren’t seeing regularly by adapting common store bought patterns or coming up with my own all together. My focus on the challenge of the sport, rather than the outcome, has led me to a more dry-fly purist outlook. I think most people would prefer a surface take to anything else, so why settle? I currently live in northern Utah, and fish Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. My lovely wife and I are expecting our own little guppy here in a couple weeks, and I can’t wait to teach her the ways.”

My name is Bailee, I got into fly fishing a few years back and fly tying about a year ago and I’ve been hooked on the hobby ever since. Being in New Zealand, one of the top places in the world for fly fishing, it’s an absolute no brainer! My favourite method to fish is big Cicada patterns. I like to get creative while challenging myself with new patterns from the vice daily.

is focused on crafting euro nymph designs that incorporate classic techniques with modern materials. Tom takes a lighthearted approach to his posts and makes a point to include all of the materials for each fly so that his followers can easily recreate his patterns. His close ups show the attention to detail in which he takes pride.

Tom fishes the trout streams of Pennsylvania along with an annual pilgrimage to wade fish the rivers of Southwest Montana. He was introduced to fly fishing by his late father who began swinging wet flies on glass rods in the early 70s, well before the popularity of the sport. Tom is now retired from a successful career as a serial entrepreneur and executive in the software industry.

Tom gets inspiration from his son and nephews who are accomplished tyers and anglers and from the many fly tyers online who share their designs and techniques.

I was raised in North Idaho during what many would call the fly fishing boom. The movie, “A River Runs Through It” was more than enough to persuade a kid who was already on the fence about the idea of “fly fishing”. So, I began the journey and quickly dove into the art of fly tying to assist my pursuits of the region’s wild and native trout. I was just a kid.

I’m now 41 years old, pursuing different fish in a different region. The native smallmouth bass of North Alabama and TN have won a place in my heart the trout once held. My passion is developing flies to pursue these fish.

Fly tying and fishing have been a long time addiction for me. I think it’s the escape from the rest of the world that I crave the most. The fact that I can be so engrossed in something lets me block out the negativity that might otherwise plague my mind. Recently I’ve added art to the hobby list, and it provides the same benefits. Painting or drawing a picture demands a level of attention to where I can just zone out. It’s a destresser for sure.

Fly fishing is a great hobby with great people involved. As I get older I’ve come to realize that it’s becoming more about the people. I’ve learned to share the hobby, the fly pattern, the secret, and the love. The river has a way of healing people that deserves to be shared.

Hunter went to college at Bellarmine University from 2014 to 2018, where he studied nursing. While attending Bellarmine, he fished for a collegiate bass team competing across the country. After he graduated college and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army, his passion for fishing only grew stronger! Hunter has been guiding the Cumberland since 2019 out of a Hyde Drift boat while also guiding out of a stealthcraft hooligan raft where he targets smallmouth bass on several of our Kentuckys streams most notably the Green River. When not on guided trips, he often puts in work on the water and at the vise, always trying to learn and improve his skill set.
