Michael Roper is a third generation carpenter / woodworker who fell in love with wood turning while studying in the Fine Woodworking program at Red Rocks Community College. He has been practicing carpentry since he was a teenager, working with his grandfather and uncle. From exterior framing to installing hard wood floors, to custom interior beam work and timber framing, to building and installing

built-in furniture, he has a diverse range of experiences working in the medium of wood. This diversity has only expanded during his years of studying at Red Rocks, where he has earned his Craftsman Certificate in Spring 2010. Along with learning how to spin wood on the lathe, he has learned how to lay out and cut joinery by hand, how to take a standing tree down to useable material, and the crucial elements of design that interact with the way he approaches wood. Roper lives in the mountains above Denver, where the forests, mountains, and animals inspire him to leave his pieces as natural as possible, to focus on the inner beauty of the wood. He uses local and sustainable wood and all natural finishes whenever possible. Because many people have never seen wood turned before, Roper takes a portable lathe with him to craft shows and farmer’s markets. He finds people are fascinated by the simplicity of the process of transformation that wood goes through. His toys, pens, bowls, and furniture can be viewed at www.coloradocustomworks.com. His pens are also for sale at Express Yourself in Evergreen, and all of his products are available at various farmer’s markets and craft shows around Colorado. He just graduated from Red Rocks Community College with an Associates Degree in Finewoodworking and will be teaching woodturning in the fall of 2011 at Red Rocks and is the chairperson for the Mentoring Program for the Front Range Woodturners. Winner of the 2010 EOG Grant from the Front Range Woodturners, April 2011 Turning Challenge winner from the Front Range Woodturners, 2011 Collegian Excellence Award winner from the American Association of Woodturners,1st Place Art Sculpture at the Denver County Fair 2011. 2012 Pete Holtus EOG winner from the Front Range Woodturners.3rd Place Art Sculpture at the Denver County Fair 2012.

I just made the mistake of looking at my 401k this morning. It’s down 8.5% since January 1st.

I’m not so sure my plan of retiring in 10 years will still be possible.

I’m not sure who the greatness is helping but it sure ain’t us middle class workers.

I have found a lot of things in trees over the years but this is a first for me.

Found two arrow tips stuck in this piece of Locust.

Had to go find my trusty pry bar to pull them out before this log goes on the mill.

Wonder what else I’ll find inside it.

Did a little vinyl hunting while i was down in Santa Fe. Hit up a place called Lost Padre Records, cool shop with a great variety of stuff. I walked away with

S*x Pistols Better Live Than Dead
Mose Allison Retrospective
Frank Zappa Studio Tan
Roberta Flack Killing Me Softly

The guy at the register looked at my funny for what i was buying but i didn’t care. Not a bad haul for 40 bucks.

Vinyl for life.

When i got to the yard this morning i saw we had taken down an Apple tree on Friday, so i jumped into the log pile and started pulling it out.

This is some really nice stuff and it will probably be the last one we take down for a while since the trees are starting to bud down in Denver.

If any of my Colorado woodworking friends want some hit me up or swing by the yard this week and get some.

This is how i feel every time we change the clocks. Why can’t we just pick one and stick with it.

You know the government does this on purpose to keep us confused and tired every 6 months.

They will never stop it.

My Birdseye Elm bowl turned out great, it’s got some spectacular color and really cool grain with the Birdseye.

I got the finish on it last week and haven’t looked at it since. Today while checking on a few other piece i noticed something off about the bowl.

As you can see from the pic the bowl isn’t round anymore. It’s 13 1/4” in one direction and 12 5/8” in the other. Classic ovaling from the tense in the block.

I really like the oval effect, how about yall?

Cut up some absolutely spectacular Aspen yesterday. Aspen gets kind of a bad rap as a woodworking wood. Yes it is a little on the soft side but it can have some amazing figure and color in the grain.

I had six giant logs yesterday and today i only have four bowl blanks left.

And heres my go to product to save the wood i’ve cut. Preservation Solutions green wood sealer is the best thing i have found to slowly dry and save my bowl blanks

Hit me up if you’re looking for any local Colorado woods.

Check it out, i bought my wife a small Meyers lemon tree and it’s starting to flower. It smells so good and it really seems to like living by the orchids.

Between the lemon tree and my olive bush my plant window has started to look good.
