Some days, my job is to just play tourist. When my editor at the Arizona Republic heard I was heading for Page, she said we’re due for a Horseshoe Bend story. So I stopped on my way in to town and snapped a few photos. I think I was the only person not taking a selfie. I know I’m an old guy but I still believe there are some sights that are fine as they stand. I don’t think adding my face, even as vividly handsome as I am, is going to make it more majestic. But that’s just me. It was my first visit to Horseshoe Bend since all the improvements by the City of Page. Good parking, improved trail (1.5 miles round-trip) and even a little fencing at the end. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the fence but it worked out well because most of the crowd seem to gather there in the middle, leaving plenty of sheer, dangerous, plunging cliff edges for those of us who like that sort of thing. If you go, use extreme caution. It is the most abrupt 1,000-foot drop-off you can imagine. Still, despite the horde of tourists, I managed to find a quiet slab of sandstone at the edges and admired a pretty remarkable office view. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

Happy summer! How I love this season, second only to spring. Even as a geezer I celebrate that “school’s out” feeling. Remember? On the last day of school you and your classmates ran screaming through halls after the final bell because summer waited just outside and you couldn’t wait to embrace it. I love the sense of freedom that comes with the season, the long languid days, and even the heat. Don’t look at summer heat as an impediment. View it as permission to be lazy, a built-in excuse for anything you want—from jumping in the pool, driving to the mountains, making an ice cream run, grilling out, sleeping in, and just shirking responsibility in general. Summer gives you the opportunity to focus on fun, to be the kind of person who truly want to be. I always try to jump into summer hard and take advantage of all the opportunities it affords. That goes double this year. At the end of last summer, I thought I was cashing in my chips. So this summer, and every one that follows, is a gift. I don’t want to squander a minute. And I started out strong. I got up this morning in Lake Havasu City, and slithered through a slot canyon right after breakfast. Crack-in-the-Mountain is always an amazing hike with its colorful pearl-smooth walls wrapped around me, a hug of pink stone. After that I walked beneath London Bridge and down along the channel past parks and sandy beaches. I dipped my hiker toes in cool lake water. Then I drove across this beautiful state—part of the journey on iconic Route 66. I stopped long enough to gobble a juicy burger in Flagstaff at Tiki Grill. And finally home to hug my wife and then sit on my porch with a talkative orange cat by my side filling me in on everything I missed and all the abuses he suffered in my absence. I’ve got a cold drink and I’m nodding politely during Jackson’s tirade (he thinks I’m writing down everything he’s meowing at me). And the sun is still up! Now that’s a day! I say again, happy, happy summer. Here's me, a bird and a lighthouse welcoming summer together. Go Lake Havasu Discover Flagstaff

Over the weekend, Arizona’s monsoon season officially began. Of course, we all know monsoon pays no mind to calendars. It rolls in on its own schedule, usually in early July. But we can always dream. For the next three months we will scan the skies daily hoping to see dark clouds climbing above a distant horizon to waft our way. We’ll listen for faint rumblings of thunder and sniff the air like bloodhounds. Often that’s the first indication of whether to take a particular storm seriously, if the scent of moisture hangs on the breeze. It’s not the full-bodied aroma of a hard rain, not the petrichor desert dwellers all know and love. It hasn’t fermented yet. Before anything is unleashed, there’s only a whisper of moisture, a river too distant to see. Teardrops not yet spilled. But how exciting just to sense it. “Do you smell that?” I’ll ask Michele. “Can you smell it? Smells like rain.” What I really mean is that it smells like hope. Because in arid lands, rain means better times ahead. Rain means easier living, less worry for plants, animals, and people alike. Rain means contentment. Rain means joy. Rain means life. Predictions for this year’s monsoon season are not promising. But I’ll keep watching, listening, and sniffing. And I’ll keep my dancing shoes handy because when that first big storm crashes down around me, I plan to be out in it, kicking up my heels and grinning wide. Gather ye monsoons! Bring on the rain!
