In 1949, the village of Caxambas was literally moved to Goodland over the course of several months. Twenty-six families, as well as their homes, the post office, and general store, were transported six miles by truck to the new locale.

Why did the village move? The heirs of Barron G. Collier, who controlled most of Marco Island after his death in 1939, wished to develop Caxambas, believing Goodland to be a better location for a small fishing community. The Collier Corporation agreed to gift the houses to their occupants, relocating them free of charge in exchange for payments toward lots at Goodland.
