More rainfall today has created conditions in the upper Brazos River basin that will require a third gate to be opened at Possum Kingdom Lake’s Morris Sheppard Dam.

At 2:00 p.m. today, Monday, June 7, the Brazos River Authority will open a third gate at Possum Kingdom Lake's Morris Sheppard Dam for a release of about 28,400 cfs. Those living on or near the Brazos River downstream of Possum Kingdom Lake should be alert for rising river conditions and additional flooding. Please note that with the opening of a third gate, TXDOT will close the Hwy. 16 bridge downstream of the Morris Sheppard Dam to all traffic. Please plan alternate routes while the gate is open.

Be advised river levels will rise quickly. Recreation on the Brazos River is discouraged during gate releases. Those living in areas on or near the Brazos River that frequently flood should take precautions to protect lives and property. This week, the Brazos River Authority received results from the second round of testing for blue-green algae at Lake Belton. Water samples from areas where several dogs died after consuming water from the lake continue to show high levels of anatoxin. The US Army Corps of Engineers has been notified of these test results.

This toxic alga appears to be long-lasting. People and their pets should avoid venturing into the water in this area of the lake and should avoid direct contact with the alga.

It is not possible to determine whether algae is toxic without laboratory testing. People are encouraged to enjoy deeper areas of the reservoir while avoiding areas with stagnant water or algal growth.

The Brazos River Authority will open one gate at Possum Kingdom Lake's Morris Sheppard Dam at about 3 p.m. today, Thursday, April 29 for a total release of 9,000 cubic feet per second.

The BRA offers a way to receive notifications of gate changes at each of its three reservoirs: Possum Kingdom Lake, Lake Granbury and Lake Limestone. The alerts – which have been in place since before Lake Limestone’s creation - are not meant to serve as a flood warning system and it remains every person’s responsibility to monitor local news outlets, National Weather Service broadcasts, and other information to remain fully aware of potentially hazardous conditions.
