Historic flooding is happening in parts of Europe. The Danube River is closed to river traffic in parts of Germany. Flooding will continue down through Austria and into Budapest in the coming days. Same story on the Rhine River and the others. If you are cruising this summer, keep a close eye on river levels and changes.

NEWS: American Queen Voyages has shut down. American Queen Voyages has made the difficult decision to shut down and all future cruises have been canceled. Guests and customers should expect to be fully refunded for canceled cruises.

Employees received an email from the company saying that their positions would be terminated at 5 p.m. local time on Feb. 20 at all locations, including Fort Lauderdale, New Orleans and Vancouver.

Uniworld will charter the Riverside Bach and Riverside Mahler under three-year agreements, with Uniworld hiring its own crew to run the vessels. The Bach will sail as the S.S. Victoria and the Mahler as the S.S. Elizabeth, entering service for Uniworld in 2024 and 2025. These are ships from the defunct "Crystal" line that were sold to the new "Riverside Cruises."

AmaWaterways has six safari itineraries with departures still available in November. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises will lift vaccine requirements for guests starting in 2023.

Guests will still have to follow the entry requirements specified by each country visited along their itinerary and are responsible for ensuring they meet those requirements.

Uniworld is the first major river cruise line to relax vaccination requirements, which many ocean cruise lines started doing this month on a much faster timeline.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises announced a new upgrade program called Cateogry+ that will allow guests to bit on potential stateroom upgrades, becoming the first river cruise line to offer the option.
Future guests will have the opportunity, pre-cruise to browse higher category staterooms and suites still available on a cruise and then place an offer. Guests will be able to bid on multiple staterooms at one time, but will only pay if their upgrade is accepted.

American Cruise Lines is planning to build a 12-ship fleet of catamaran-style vessels, with the first to debut in summer 2023.

The 109-passenger ships will have a hybrid river-expedition design, with the upscale features found on American Cruise Lines' riverboats, plus a swim platform with kayaks and a tender for exploration via Zodiac craft. Their catamaran-style twin hulls will give the vessels the ability to enter shallow waterways.

From summer through fall, Avalon Waterways operated more than 100 cruises across Europe, Egypt and the Galapagos Islands. It also tested every cruise passenger in preparation for the journey home.

Bottom line? Avalon Waterways ended its 2021 cruise season in late December with no positive COVID-19 cases aboard any of its ships.

“Not one of our guests or crew members tested positive for COVID in 2021,” an Avalon spokesperson said.

Unfortunately, some river cruise lines have cancelled the Christmas Market cruises this season. (especially on the Danube) The pandemic is spiking again in places like Austria, where they are having a lockdown again.
