Ancient Oak Sanctuary

A 5 bedroom house and 20 acres in southwest Michigan to come and find sanctuary and rest. Open year-round.

We're a family of 7 (plus a dog, 3 chickens and a fish) who live in the city of Chicago who also love the space and quiet of the outdoors. We bought this house and 20 acres for respite for our family and friends. We make the couple hour drive up every month or so for whole family weekends, birthday celebrations, individual retreat weekends, and weeklong summer vacations. We love a place where we c

an be loud outside, the kids can run free and we can build tree forts. We hope you give it a try and that it can be a place of fun and retreat as well!

The making of a cottage garden.

"The cottage garden is a distinct style that uses informal design, traditional materials, dense plantings, and a mixture of ornamental and edible plants...Flowers common to early cottage gardens included traditional florists' flowers such as primroses and violets, along with flowers with household use such as calendula and various herbs. Others were the richly scented old-fashioned roses that bloomed once a year, and simple flowers like daisies."

I stopped at South Beach in South Haven on my way back to Ancient Oak after picking up some groceries and gas in town. It was a spontaneous decision, and I wasn't expecting more than a fall weather beach walk. I was rewarded with this.

I ventured off Ancient Oak Sanctuary about 20 minutes to kayak down the Black River, which feeds into Lake Michigan. It was perfect.
