Labor Day, 2023
Caller ID: “City of Saginaw”
Me: WTH? “North Country Lodge “
Caller(heavy accent) “Hello, how are you?”
Me:(upmost politeness) “I’m fine, how are you?”
Caller: “ I’m fine, thank you for asking. Do you take any medications?”
Me: “You showed up on caller ID as City of Saginaw. Since when did the government start selling medications? On a HOLIDAY?”
Caller: (Very surprised) “It’s a holiday?!?!?”
Me: “You aren’t even in America if you don’t know it’s Labor Day”
*CLICK* (he hung up on me) HOW RUDE. 😂 Lord, people must fall for this if it wasn’t pricy or they would QUIT.
I get multiple scam calls on all my business lines, but there is still some ways you can tell most of them.
1) There’s a small pause and an audible “click” after you speak. (Most of the calls are electronically started and they don’t connect to the person until you speak)
2) The caller ID will often show someone you would normally not ignore, like DTE, consumer energy, police dept, DHS, etc. Sometimes it’s a simple random number with your area code.
3) The caller will usually have heavy accent, but not always!! Be aware!. Sometimes you are talking to a VERY sophisticated computer recording that can generate responses as well.
4) DON’T GIVE THEM ANY CORRECT INFORMATION!!! Sometimes I give false info to mess with them, I figure if I waste their time, that’s entertaining me and hopefully, saves someone else from being scammed.
Telling them to “remove me from calling list” does not work. Blocking them also does absolutely nothing, they just change numbers and call back. Problem is , they are electronically calling you from a computer that is calling from in a list that is generated from every number combination possible and available. Cell phones can block calls that aren’t saved in your phone, but land lines and businesses cannot.
Once you realize it’s a scam, WASTE THEIR TIME. Keep them on the phone as long as possible until they realize that they’ve been had and hang up on you. Say you gotta find your wallet. Give fake info. Give phone to a chatty child or a whiny dog or a deaf lonely senior citizen that has no info to give. Ask what they are wearing. Anything. You could be saving someone else that is vulnerable from getting scammed and it’s fun after a while. It’s a money thing. If their extreme measures fail to work, they will eventually dry up. It’s just a game for them to try and “outsmart” us. Don’t let them win.
