Surprisingly, I see Winter Wrens a lot less than the closely related Pacific and even Eurasian Wrens. So it was lot of fun to find several during a recent CBC in the San Jacinto woods near Houston.

Good birding everyone, Stephan

Tapaculos are notorious skulkers, creeping through dense tangles like small rodents and flying reluctantly. Fortunately, they are often fairly common and vocal, revealing their presence and identity with distinctive songs and calls. The species occurring at higher elevation are often more bold, frequently coming out into the open as they scurry through elfin forest or paramo scrublands. Here are three species from southern Peru, the localized Vilcabamba Tapaculo, even more range-restricted Ampay Tapaculo, and more widespread Puna Tapaculo, a truly fantastic family of birds.

The impressive Toucan Barbet belongs to the small neotropical family Semnornithidae. The two species in the toucan barbet family have fewer and finer rictal bristles than other barbets and a tiny notch at the tip of the lower bill. Our Cali Colombia tour offers fantastic chances to see this spectacular bird.

Crimson-rumped Toucanet is just one of many stunning species we will see up close during our Cali Colombia Tours.

Our Sri Lanka tour in October 2024 was fun, exciting, and most successful on the birding front. Our small group of determined and motivated birders maximized their time on the field and were rewarded with incredible birding success. Some of the main highlights included excellent views of all 35 curr...

Excellent views of the scarce Buckley's Forest-Falcon were a definite highlight from our time in southern Peru.

We greatly enjoyed birding in the unique Yungas forest of northern Argentina. This lush habitat held many exciting species, including the localized Red-faced Guan, sneaky Ochre-faced Spinetail, and active Ochre-faced Tody-Flycatcher. It has been an exciting trip so far.
