Wow. Two years ago I only dreamed of owning any original artifacts from the iconic Mansion House hotel (1824-1924) at Court Square. I already own a Mansion House cigar token and 2 letterheads/stationary from 1886. Yesterday I received my 4th piece of history from that hotel. It's an 1893 stationary envelope from the hotel...addressed to Capt Robert H Wright in Newberry SC (a Civil War veteran and later store merchant). The Mansion House logo on this envelope is very unusual and "artsy." I'm also attaching another Mansion House envelope from 3 years earlier (1890) that looks much more in keeping with usual fonts/styles from the late 1800s.

“Great Graves of Greenville.” Big Chuck was surprised at this story!
Famous Nobel Prize winner Albert Einstein’s 5 year old grandson, Klaus, is buried in Greenville’s Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery! Albert Einstein's son, Hans, lived in Greenville, living at 223 Randall Street in 1938. It was here that his son, the great Albert Einstein’s grandson, died of diptheria at age 5 on January 5, 1939. James F. Mackey & Sons conducted the funeral. While I was strolling through this historic cemetery, this was undoubtedly a remarkable, poignant grave to come upon (Section U).

I was thrilled to make this new acquisition. Prior to the civil war, there were no banks in Greenville. Hamlin Beattie was a prominent local merchant who was also the local agent for the Bank of Charleston. After the war in 1872, he started the first bank here, First National of Greenville, with a capital stock of $100,000. Very few artifacts remain from Greenville earliest years of its first bank. This is a personal check from 1877 (just 5 years after the bank started) of local attorney, Isaac M. Bryan, writing a check to himself for $5 on a check with the logo of First National Bank of Greenville.
