Big Chuck loves a day off (no tours) to wander downtown GVL. Today the Farmers Street Market didn’t disappoint and then a nice lunch at Crust and Craft. After, I stopped for a cupcake at Carmella’s and I enjoyed it on the brand new “bridge bench” out front. After, I joined the 20th birthday bash for Falls Park. The agenda was amazing with a welcome from Mayor White and a short talk from the man who created the pedestrian bridge, Miguel Rosales. Then we heard from the park architect, and the president of the Carolina Foothills Garden Club (or as she called it “the dirt pushing, pearl wearing garden ladies”). It was a grand celebration. I then walked up Main Street and was stopped in my tracks by the sight and sounds of a free NOMA Plaza concert! It was the 50-strong Greenville Concert Band. The weather was great, the crowd was big, and the music was incredible! Loving my Greenville today❤️ here are some pics

Anyone got any interesting trivia/facts about Pickens County? Things other than Shoeless Joe, Sassafras Mtn, Table Rock/reservoir/tea farm. Interesting products made there? People? Things that would be more familiar or interesting to visitors?

Kristen Grissom is head of the Culinary Institute of the Carolinas at Greenville Technical College, where I taught for two semesters. I can attest she is not the sort to show off.

“On the back of a wagon, she would go from this community to that community, teaching young kids, young men, because a lot of them during that time couldn’t read or write.”

Greenville's 2nd courthouse building on Court Square was built in 1823 and designed by America's first important architect and Charlestonian, Robert Mills. In 1820, Mills was appointed as acting commissioner of the Board of Public Works in South Carolina. In 1823, he was the superintendent of public buildings. In the next few years, he designed numerous buildings in South Carolina, including the campus of the University of South Carolina, jails, and the Fireproof Building in Charleston. He also designed over a dozen court houses throughout the state, including Greenville's. People often comment how it looks like something from Charleston...because the familiar ones in Charleston today were also designed by him. It was (in my opinion) the most beautiful building Greenville has ever had. After serving as the main court house until 1855, it became the Records Building, then in the 20th century housed the Chamber of Commerce in its last years.
The context for when it was torn down in 1924 was that skyscrapers became the "modern" icon of cities (first in Chicago, then spreading to NYC, etc) in the decades before...so any city with ambition and money wanted to get a skyscraper too. Greenville's Chamber was old, outdated, small, and not efficient in its space for a growing city and Chamber of Commerce awash with money from the textile industry. Consequently, the building was torn down and the new Chamber of Commerce "skyscraper" helped bring Greenville into the new age...the New South. The 1925 Chamber building has since become an iconic fixture for generations. Essentially, there have been 2 buildings on that spot in our entire city history.
