Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is with great pride that I announce our paralegal and head of marketing walked the stage this morning and received her Bachelor’s Degree! Rebecca isn’t shy about telling her story, so she doesn’t mind me sharing with you that when I met her, she had run her life off into the ditch, literally and figuratively. She had criminal charges, a CPS case, and a pretty severe drug addiction. I was appointed by the court to represent her. Rebecca got drug treatment, worked every service the court could order and then some, and completely transformed her life. She started going to church with me and my family and slowly became so much more than a client, but a friend and a part of our family. She stayed clean, went to college, and started working for my firm. What a privilege it has been to watch her transformation! Not only does she work as a paralegal, she also works with 2 non profit organizations focused on helping others in the CPS system. She’s an inspiration to so many! This is why we at Jessica McDonald & Associates don’t just see a case or a file or a crime. We see the PEOPLE who are, mostly likely, going through one of the hardest things they will ever experience. We are proud to provide outstanding legal services, but more than that, we strive to help the whole person and not just litigate cases. Because sometimes, we get to bear witness to miracles! Kudos to Sheriff Terry Jones and the Hunt County Sheriff's Office for launching this new unit! I’ve practice criminal law for almost 27 years and I know just how much this program is needed. This will benefit our community so very much!

Today, the Hunt County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) launched its Mental Health Unit (MHU). Please help us in welcoming our Mental Health Unit deputies, Johnny Whitehead and Jacob Wells. Both Whitehead and Wells have been employed with HCSO for two years and come to the unit from the patrol division. Whitehead and Wells are specially trained and certified to assist people experiencing a mental health crisis. Sheriff Terry Jones said, “The goal of this unit is to keep the people who are experiencing a mental health crisis out of jail if possible.” Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office MHU for questions or direction.

The Bonham Public Library was awarded a $10,000 grant by the American Library Association (ALA) initiative that provides community engagement and accessibility resources to small and rural libraries to help them better serve people with disabilities.

We will be hosting an in-person event to discuss how the public would like to see the grant funds used at the Library. The event will be held Tuesday, August 13th at 5:30pm at the Bonham Public Library located at 305 E. 5th St. Bonham, TX 75418.

We encourage residents to attend this event and join in a discussion on how to improve the building facilities for easier access for those with disabilities.

In my line of work as a criminal defense attorney, I have all too often had to point out the mistakes police officers make. I have had to fight against the bad apples that spoil the repetitional barrel for the rest. I want to be equally as diligent to point out exceptional public servants who bring honor to themselves, their profession, and our community. I have never had the pleasure of meeting Officer Norris, but I hope one day I will to thank her in person.

Additionally, as a follower of Jesus, this act has a special significance to me. This young officer is literally following the example of my Jesus. I, a person who crafts words for a living, cannot fine an adequate way to describe the respect and the gratitude I have for Officer Norris for her service to “the least of these.”

I want to flood social media with this and stories like it. I have a daughter who turns 16 years old today. She is inundated with images of what a woman should look, like, act like, be like…. But THIS! THIS is what I pray my daughter grows up to immulate. THIS is a beauty that goes soul deep. Let’s make THIS what our daughters strive to become!

B.R. has been in foster care for 3065 days. B.R. has talent for creating music and singing and wanted sound equipment to make music. Fostering the Magic gave him a Foscusrite Scarlett Audio Interface with sound insulation. I don't know what most of those words mean but I know that it was made possible through our generous supporters. Tomorrow morning I will have the honor of presenting the adoption of 2 teenagers, not related, who are being adopted by the same family. The boys were both in foster care more than once in their lives. The total days boy 1 has been in foster care in his life is 3065. The total days boy 2 has spent in foster care is 4015. Tomorrow is a day to celebrate! And these adoptive parents will forever be my heroes! If you are a person of prayer, send up a prayer of thanks for these amazing parents who have created a home for these boys who have had none. And send up a prayer for these boys who will still deal with their challenges, but now with loving parents by their side.
