Exciting Art Installation Honors Filipino Wild West Performers in Greenville 🎭

The Texan Theater in Greenville is proud to host We Are Coming, a site-specific art installation by artists Yumi Janairo Roth and Emmanuel David, honoring the forgotten Filipino Rough Riders of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West.

This powerful installation shines a light on the Filipino performers who were part of Buffalo Bill’s traveling show, which made its way to Greenville on October 12, 1900, during its first visit to Texas. Using historical archives from the U.S. and beyond, Roth and David uncovered the names and stories of these performers and are now reanimating their memory by featuring their names on vintage theater marquees across the country.

At the Texan Theater, We Are Coming will be installed on the marquee beginning Wednesday, January 29, at 10:00 am, and remain on display through Friday, January 31, 2025.

This project transforms Buffalo Bill’s iconic phrase “I Am Coming” into “We Are Coming,” bringing to life the voices of Filipino Rough Riders who were instrumental in expanding the idea of the American West. Roth and David’s work has traveled across the country, from Cody, Wyoming, to Los Angeles, and is now making its mark here in Greenville.
