Americans will need an ETIAS visa in order to travel to many European countries after next year.
At the moment there are no visas for US citizens traveling to Europe for short-stays for tourism or visiting relatives due to the agreements between the two world powers but from 2021, traveling to Europe from USA will require an ETIAS visa in order to gain entry to the Schengen area.
Currently, there are 22 European countries that form part of the Schengen Area:

Netherlands
Germany
France
Spain
Portugal
Sweden
Finland
Denmark
Lithuania
Latvia
Estonia
Poland
Slovakia
Hungary
Slovenia
Italy
Greece
Czech Republic
Malta
Non-EU Member States:
Iceland
Liechtenstein
Norway
Switzerland
Micro-States de facto part of Schengen Area:
Monaco
San Marino
