Yosemite National Park is beautiful year round, but in February for a few weeks, there is a rare event when the sun sets upon horsetail falls. When this seasonal waterfall actually has water, and the sun sets upon it at just the right angle, it looks like fire, hence the event named “firefall.” (This is different than another historical literal firefall in Yosemite’s past). These images are taken from a unique aerial photography vantage point at 3500 ft above ground level in a Cessna 182. You can see the angle of light that has to hit the falls just right, and if clouds are in the way you won’t see it at all. This particular flight and weather allowed us to briefly see firefall for less than 2 minutes. It’s amazing to see from the sky or the ground. Image 1: light on horsetail falls, image 2: two minutes before the light hits the falls. Feel free to share your firefall experience.
