With bright sunny days approaching our meadows, you might stumble upon some unusual pink flowers around Yosemite Valley. Showy milkweeds (Asclepias speciosa) are native plants of western North America that play an essential role in the park’s ecosystem.

When in bloom, animals take interest in milkweed’s fuzzy pink flowers. Bees are frequently spotted crawling around the flower’s center, accumulating pollen to eventually transport back to their hives. If you are lucky, you might even spot a tiny hummingbird darting through the meadow on the same pollen-collecting quest.

Most famously, showy milkweeds provide a safe haven for some of the Valley’s most charismatic visitors. Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) annually leave their eggs under the safe leaves of these plants. Through metamorphosis, these eggs eventually become the larvae (caterpillar), the pupa (chrysalis), and finally the adult butterfly that then travels north on the migration to Canada. Milkweeds essentially act as nurseries for monarchs to fully develop and continue the butterfly life cycle.

These incredible plants provide food and shelter for some of the park’s most amazing wildlife. Next time you are in one of Yosemite’s beautiful meadows, make sure to look around at the plants that surround you- even the smallest showy milkweed can contain a microcosmic universe. - 📸 & 📝 Reposted from National Park FB Page
