Lucky Bend Lookout Vacation Rental

Lucky Bend Lookout Vacation Rental A Mid-Century Gem in the Redwoods—Bring the Kids! Think traveling with kids means sacrificing gorgeous, architecturally inspiring accommodations? Think again.

Your kids will feel like woodland creatures—and you’ll feel like a travel-planning wizard—when your family settles into our mid-century modern cabin, tucked into a dense stand of redwoods beside the Russian River in Guerneville. (One ancient redwood has been presiding over our part of the forest for over a thousand years!)

A true mid-century modern gem, Lucky Bend Lookout was architect-desig

ned and constructed in 1966, and is kid-friendly down to the childproofed details. It’s environmentally friendly, too—during a recent remodel, we took care to increase thermal performance by 400 percent (that includes heated floors!) and used only sustainable building materials and native plants. Protecting nature—which is so gorgeously on display here—is a priority for us. In true mid-century modern tradition, the Lucky Bend Lookout’s open floor plan, elevated treehouse-style deck, enormous windows, and warm redwood walls and ceilings merge indoor and outdoor spaces. Have you ever vacationed somewhere that’s brimming with natural beauty and felt guilty for just wanting to relax inside with a good book? Here, that’s no dilemma. Watch ospreys soar among the redwoods from the couch in the living area, decorated with clean lines and whimsical fabrics. Or sauté fresh vegetables from the Guerneville Farmers Market in our fully stocked kitchen as you watch your kids play outside on the deck. Then, present your handiwork to your hungry family at the sleek dining table—which has room for 10—and watch the Russian River drifting by in the fading light of evening while the adults sip our region’s famous wines. Or you can get even closer to nature and feast at the eight-person outdoor dining table on the spacious deck among the trees. Or plan on an epic day of activity and reward yourself with our private chef who will prepare a gourmet meal right to your tastes right there are Luck Bend Lookout and sweep away all the dishes and cleanup afterwards while you relax on the deck in the warm breeze. After dinner, get cozy in the living room and watch the stars reflect their sparkle on the river as you browse Netflix, HuluPlus, or Pandora Radio on our 47-inch flat screen TV. The couch doubles as a pull-out bed. For the kids, we keep our cabin clear of breakable knickknacks and stocked with all the gear you need. A Pack ‘n Play, high chair, step stool, potty-chair, toddler bed rail, baby swing, and stroller keep the little ones safe. Plus, we supply a few extra goodies to keep them happy, like a water table, a swing set under the deck, and some inside toys. One bedroom features a reading nook and a sturdy set of bunk beds for a fun, summer-camp setup, except much comfier—we use memory foam mattresses on all of our beds. And your kids’ imaginations will run wild with the magical redwood grove in view just outside their window. Two adult bedrooms, with queen-sized beds and mid-century modern details like shag carpeting and low-profile beds, invite you to sink in for the night. A view of the redwoods will greet you in the morning. Our home is a dream for families who love the river life with a floating dock, along with stairs that lead directly to the river. The water will literally be steps away! As our guest, you’ll also enjoy complimentary use of our two kayaks, and canoe. The dock is not guaranteed to be available on a set date. It is usually in the water approximately from Mid-June through September which is when the seasonal dams are added to the river. Downtown Guerneville is only a mile from the Lucky Bend Lookout. We are located 10 minutes by car from the nearest winery and 15 to 20 minutes from dozens more. There are even kid-friendly wineries in the area! A sandy beach along the Russian River is a 10-minute walk from the property, or hop in the car and head 20 minutes to the Sonoma Coast to surf, explore tide pools, and spot harbor seals sunning themselves. Lucky Bend Lookout comes with beach chairs, an umbrella, beach toys, a cooler, a picnic basket, and a cruiser bike. Our calendar fills fast—the time to book your mid-century modern oasis is today! 🦄 Ready to start dreaming about a weekend trip to the Russian River area? I made a super fun itinerary that is great for families with babies, toddlers, and big kids. Today I am sharing day 1 of the itinerary and then in the next few posts I will share days 2 and 3.

🗣Comment below if you want me to tag you in the posts for days 2 and 3 so you don’t miss out.

😆P.S. This itinerary involves a lot of opportunities for drinking & eating. You might want to eliminate one of the stops so you don’t overdo it.

🚗10/11 AM. Depart from home and head for Sebastopol.

🌮11/12 PM. Casual lunch and hard cider at the Golden State Cider tap room at the Barlow. From your table you can order from several different restaurants in the immediate area and they deliver to you at your table.

🍻1/2 PM. Horse & Plow tasting room for wine and cider tasting. The gardens, corn hole, and chickens are a big hit with kids of all sizes! They also sell light snacks that are kid friendly.

🥑2/3 PM if you need to make a stop for groceries, Andy’s is a great local market on the way to Lucky Bend Lookout in Guerneville.

🍷3/4 PM walking/wine tasting/nap time on the West county Trail in Graton. Start at the park and ride lot next to Paul Matthew winery. Get out the stroller or scooter and walk north on the West County Trail for 30 minutes to Russian River Vineyards which is a lovely stop for wine and food with plenty of room for kids to play and explore. You can keep going for another 30 minutes to downtown Forestville where the trail ends and stop for ice cream at Angela’s. This could also be done as a bike ride on a different day.

🧑🏽‍🍳5/6 PM arrive at Lucky Bend Lookout with our very own Chef Kelly waiting for you with an amazing gourmet meal.

Our floating dock usually on the river from late May to late October. Most of our neighbors have docks that need deeper water for installation so they don't go in until mid-June and they come out in mid-September.

If you want to enjoy our dock this summer then now is the best time to make your reservation so you can get the dates you want!

Do you like to take elegant portriats in fields of mustard flowers? My talents are more in line with the corny photos, as you can see. 😂 Wheras my friend Natasha from has the fairytale whimsical style nailed down.

Wine country is the BEST place for taking photos in mustard fields, because the dormant vineyards add a stunning element to the background of your photos.

Here is a list of some great places for mustard photos:

🌼 Just west of Fogline Vineyards in Fulton, we stopped for a quick mustard photo shoot. It has ample parking on the side of the road.

🌼 Just after you turn from Alexander Valley Road onto Highway 128, both sides of the road are covered in bright yellow flowers.

🌼 B.R. Cohn Winery’s iconic "mustard flower hill"

🌼 Kunde Family Winery in Kenwood

🌼The Joe Rodota Regional Trail between downtown Santa Rosa and Sebastopol

🌼Gloria Ferrer Vineyards

🌼 Imwalle Gardens on Third Street in Santa Rosa

🌼 Brown Farm in Santa Rosa

"Our stay was perfect, it was rainy this weekend but still had a great time and the cabin had everything we needed. Will love to come back next year in the summer." --Fabiola, November 2024

🎣 Do you like to fish? The Russian River has an interesting fishing history that I learned about when watching a documentary called Rivers of a Lost Coast. In the past the river was overflowing with Salmon and Steelhead, but due to overfishing the number of fish has dramatically declined.

🐟 Even though the Russian River has changed a lot in modern times, it is STILL a great place for Steelhead fishing. The Steelhead season is in the fall and winter, and conditions have to be just right with the water flowing not too quickly and not too slowly. Our local fishing outfitter Kings Sport & Tackle does fishing rentals and guided fishing trips which can help increase your odds of catching the “Fish of 10,000 casts”. 😱 They also regularly update their page with information on river conditions.

🎣 We got lucky a couple of winters ago and spotted a few fisherman right behind Lucky Bend Lookout as they were catching Steelhead at the “Lucky Bend” of the Russian River. They had managed to catch at 18 inch Steelhead!

Do you think you will go fishing this winter? Where do you like to go? Make it a long weekend and stay at Lucky Bend Lookout during the Steelhead run! 😉

Check out my story for a link to our blog post about fishing on the Russian River with kids.

🌊 We love Bodega Head. It is part of Sonoma Coast State Park, located in at Bodega Bay.

🐋 It is an excellent place for enjoying whale watching from December through May.

🥾 There are a couple of easy hike options with spectacular views of the ocean and wildlife.

What do you love about Monte Rio, CA? Have you even heard of Monte Rio?

Monte Rio is a sweet little town on the Russian River about 3 miles downriver from Guerneville. It is smaller than Guerneville, but there are a lot of special places in Monte Rio that we really love.

The top things to see and do in Monte Rio are to:

🏖 go to the beach
🏌️‍♀️ golf at Northwood
🟢 shave ice at the Mondo Truck (closed for winter...brrr)
🍔 eat at Rio Cafe
💜 shop for tie dye
🎬 see a movie at the Rio Theatre
☕️Have coffee and a sweet treat at Lightwave Coffee

When was the last time you got to play on an uprooted thousand year-old tree? Armstrong Redwoods State Preserve is just as beautiful as Muir Woods National Monument and doesn’t have the crazy crowds. It’s a natural playground for the kiddos with an easy walk through the main grove of trees on the Pioneer Trail.

There is an easy and flat stroller friendly loop around the forest, and we made a treasure map for children to follow along the way. Comment below if you want to sign up for a copy of the treasure map! The map comes with guides to 2 other family adventures along the Russian River that we love.

You can also get the guide by going to the link in my stories.

🥾 Sharing our favorite flat hike near the Russian River!

The Kortum Trail

✍️ Details: Coastal trail between Bodega Bay and Jenner, 4 mi round-trip, no dogs, free parking

🚻 Amenities: Restrooms, but no water

🐚 Start at either Shell Beach or Wrights Beach. Shell Beach is closer to Jenner, & Wrights is closer to Bodega Bay. We recommend that if you are coming from the Russian River resort area that you start at Shell Beach & walk south to Wrights Beach. This is an out-and-back hike so you can turn around whenever you want. There are also some unmarked paths that lead to the beaches if you want to get closer to the water.

🌊 If you come to Shell Beach at low tide, then you can enjoy tide pooling. This hiking adventure takes you across the bluffs along the edge of the pacific with views of cliffs, crags, and beaches.

🌼 Beautiful wildflowers in the springtime.

🐋 If you get lucky you might spot a grey whale if you go in winter or spring.

✵Bonus Tips✵

Before or after you can:
🥖 Get bread at Wildflour Bakery
🐟 Eat seafood in Bodega Bay
🍔 Try the newest restaurant in Jenner called Jilly’s Real Food Roadhouse
🍷 Taste wine at Sonoma Coast Vineyards
👶🏻 🚘 If the babes need a snooze cruise you can add in a scenic drive on Coleman Valley Road, Bohemian Highway, or highway 116.

♨️ Where do we hang out in the evening? Yep, it's the fire pit! We love making s’mores and visiting with family and friends while enjoying a glass of wine around the fire. And the kids like it too, not only because of s'mores but also because the swings are right next to the fire pit, making the whole area a fun place for kids and adults alike.

Are you ready to warm up by this cozy fire?

"This private gem along the Russian River is perfect for a gathering of friends or family. You are right at the river with access to swimming and kayaking. The house has an easy, all on one level layout. The main deck is sheltered by giant redwood trees. We enjoyed our gathering tremendously." Birgit, October 2024

Sonoma Coast State Park is not your traditional state park with defined borders around one large piece of land. The beautiful territory of Sonoma Coast State Park is primarily a collection of beautiful beaches and coastline between Bodega Bay and Jenner and includes areas around the Russian River estuary which empties into the ocean near Jenner.

Our favorite spots at Sonoma Coast State Park in order from South to North (Bodega Bay to Jenner) are:

Bodega Head—an amazing spot for wildlife viewing and whale watching with an easy hike along the bluffs. Also close to our favorite chowder at Spud Point Crab Co.

Shell Beach—a good spot for tide pooling, and the start of 2 of our favorite hikes; along the Kortum Trail on the coast, and Pomo Canyon Trail which goes inland along the Russian River to a beautiful Redwood grove.

Goat Rock Beach—a favorite spot for seal spotting (from a distance) at the mouth of the Russian River, wave watching, fort building, and rock hounding. Café Aquatica is a great place for a bite or coffee when you visit this beach.

Sonoma Coast State Park Viewpoint—a short walk to an amazing spot for whale spotting and enjoying the sunset.

Have you been to Sonoma Coast State Park? What did you see?
