Our daughter was diagnosed in 2006 when she was 6. She is the only one in our family with it, and no, she didnโt eat too much sugar! It is an autoimmune disease, her body basically attacked itself to the point where her pancreas is not functioning and does not produce any insulin. Therefore, she will need artificial insulin for the rest of her life, and she uses the Omnipod pump to administer it. At the time of her diagnosis, we didnโt really anything about the disease, but Iโm so glad we were able to find such an amazing amount of information and support. Through countless hours of online research, and with the help of her pediatric team, we were able to quickly adapt to this new lifestyle, going through the motions of high and low blood sugars, growth spurts and sick days. This baby girl of ours is now 24 and thriving! She is well on her way to becoming a nurse, and we couldnโt be any prouder!
These events are what helps funding research and trials so that one day, maybe even in her lifetime, my daughter and fellow type 1 diabetics may get a chance to a transplant or even a cureโฆ
