Just a friendly Summer reminder to be careful around these Arkansas natives when in the wild. Some folks can be allergic to an oil called urushiol (yur-oo-shee-aal). If you have an allergic reaction to this oil, you can develop a rash with A LOT of itching. 🍃

Although it doesn’t only grow on trees, there is a saying…”Three on a tree, let it be.”

❓Did you know it is illegal to kill a snake in the state of Arkansas unless it is harming you? We did not know this until last year, and we have lived in the state our whole lives! 😲

🐍Snakes help keep our ecosystem in check. 🌿

🌅While at Sugarloaf Lake, you may see the NON-VEMOMOUS Banded Water Snake. They will probably go the other direction if they see you. They are often confused with the venomous copperhead, but they are harmless.

😎Well, we have always called it the Buzzard Ballet, because every evening the buzzards come to roost in the trees at the end of the lake. We have always enjoyed the way they glide through the wind every evening.

Today is the day!

The big day is here, the total solar eclipse will start in just a few hours.

If you aren’t in the red shaded area below (totality) please understand this eclipse will be just like many others.

Keep expectations very low unless you’re in the totality area.

The deep partial eclipse will not feature the daylight to darkness effect.

Make the short drive to the totality path, it is worth it.

I’ll have a county map below for you to reference your location and the totality path.

Traffic congestion will likely be the worst right after the eclipse in areas with the longest totality timing.

Enjoy this one, because we won’t see this here again until 2045.

Spring has sprung and the crappie are making their annual migration to the shallows, which means March Madness picks aren't the only ones you should be thinking about this week...check out these top Crappie Fishing picks in West-Central Arkansas. No busted brackets here 😄

🐟 Lake Dardanelle – Lower flow rates over the last couple of years have made it possible for Lake Dardanelle’s crappie population to make a comeback. Anglers have been reporting good catches this winter, especially around Piney Bay and the Illinois Bayou sections of the lake. The first couple of weeks of April are usually “prime time” for the shallow water bite. As a reminder, all crappie shorter than 10 inches must be released and the daily limit is 30 fish per angler.

🐟 Blue Mountain Lake – Located in Yell and Logan counties, is probably the most consistent producer of crappie in West-Central Arkansas. Sampling completed in the fall of 2023 revealed the highest catch rate of 12-inch plus fish on record, so fishing should be great in 2024. Crappie harvest on Blue Mountain is regulated with a 9-inch minimum length limit, and the daily limit is 20 fish per angler.

🐟 Ni**od Lake – Located in Yell and Perry counties, is also a consistent producer of crappie. During the last sample completed in 2022, we noticed improvements in the growth rates of crappie, which is great news. There is no minimum length limit on crappie (daily limit is 30), so don’t be afraid to keep a few 8- or 9-inch fish, as an increased harvest of small fish will lead to better overall growth.

🎣 Sleeper pick: Sugar Loaf Lake – A small impoundment owned by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and located in Sebastian County. During a creel survey completed in 2022, anglers did not have high catch rates of crappie, but what they caught was big. As a matter of fact, the average crappie harvested was over 12 inches in length, and fish up to almost 16 inches were harvested. Sugar Loaf Lake’s crappie population is managed with no minimum length limit and the daily limit is 30 fish per day.
