Tiger sharks are the largest shark species regularly spotted in Hawaiian waters. This time of year females return to their pupping areas to give birth. Tiger sharks have “natal homing” meaning they return to the same place they were born to give birth to their young. This means we are lucky to see some of the same tiger sharks year after year.

It’s big shark season! Not only are tiger sharks becoming a more frequent sighting on our tours, it is also Galapagos mating season! We’ve started seeing a few of the larger female Galapagos hanging out at are typically more male dominated site.

Into the blue abyss
The spot where we visit the sharks is somewhere between 300-400ft deep. Most days we can see anywhere between 60-100ft of visibility! That means during the dive we just have beautiful blue ocean and sharks!

Eye to eye with apex predators 😍
Sharks actually rely on their eyesight a lot for day to day function. They see in monochromatic vision so high contrasting objects stand out brightly against the blue ocean background.

Sharks are extremely important to the ocean. They eat the sick and injured animals which leaves behind healthy ecosystems that can thrive. Without sharks disease would spread though fish populations and cause the food chain to become out of balance.

Why does the north shore have a tiger “season”? Tiger sharks in the Hawaiian islands typically stay around their respective islands and even in specific zones around those islands the majority of the year. However, in the winter months they converge on Maui where there is a higher concentration of whales and chances for more feeding opportunity. From summer to early fall the tigers return to the same zones to pup. 🐯

Stripes 😍 tiger sharks stripes will actually fade as they age. When they are juveniles the stripes are bright with high contrast and as they get older and the skin stretches they become less dramatic.

Are the sharks at the site family? The short answer is no. But it’s a little more complicated than that. Sharks have no parental care so once the babies are born they are on their own. The Galapagos sharks are not a highly migratory species. The population in Hawaii is distinct from those in other parts of the world. It’s likely even that the Galapagos on the north shore tend to stay on that side of the island. Therefore, it is possible that the sharks we see at the site are genetically related in some way. However, it is extremely unlikely that they recognize each other as siblings or cousins the way more social species, like humans, do. #shark #northshore #sharkdiving #sharkallies #sharkswimhawaii
