Heads up, we're closed October 14 & 15, the weekend of the 51st Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival. But you should still come to town because 275 of America’s top artists and craft makers will be showcasing their latest work at this nationally renowned festival. We're going to be out and about enjoying the fair, just like you! If we're not at the pie-eating contest or pumpkin carving station, you can find us enjoying the scene in lounge chairs on the front porch of the gallery. See you on Main Street!

When The Power of Art First Struck Me
Yesterday my elementary school art teacher called to congratulate me on the upcoming opening of M Stark Gallery! Mary Hill Swope was my art teacher from kindergarten through eighth grade. Her classroom was a magical place of cubbyholes, flat files, kilns, and a mysterious box labeled Found Objects filled with things like corks, screws, nails, nabobs of wood, empty spools, etc. We wore our fathers’ worn-out button-down shirts backwards as painting smocks.
The power of art first struck me when I brought home "Black Cat," 1978, 12” x 10.5”, Cray-pas pastel and watercolor on paper. Carefully rolled to make the trip home, you can still see the creases. My parents made a huge deal about it and loved it so much they had it FRAMED. I was in 1st grade. "Claws" has always been on the wall everywhere I’ve lived; now it’s in my daughter’s room. In 1979 the second of my two masterpieces was created: "Rainbow," acrylic linocut print on paper, 12” x 9”. I found it in my father’s files after he died, and I framed it myself. From my Ruscha period.
Mary H. Swope is still an important person in my life. I see her often at art openings and other alumnae events. I have a piece of her work in my personal collection: Polaroid 12-21 “Geo. Marine Biol,” from a 2012 series of Seinfeld episode TV screen shots, which I can now see is a precursor of digital memes, she was ahead of her time on many fronts. There are a few from the series still available on the secret menu at Open-Editions
