Salty Dog Saloon in Homer!

A new perspective of an old favorite. βš“

Built in 1897, The Salty Dawg Saloon occupies one of Homer's oldest and most historic structures.

Since its construction, this cabin has been home to a school, family home, post office, coal mining office, and even a railway station, all before becoming the beloved bar we know and love today.

❀️ if you've enjoyed a visit to the Salty Dawg!

More than a dozen Great Blue Herons have been hanging out on our dock in Halibut Cove in the early day sunshine.

I didn't have a chance to get far from the house this weekend, but I did see this Great Blue Heron standing on the ice in the river by the house. Here's to a great week ahead.

Such a puff-ect shot!

"Puffins are incredible birds, and spend all winter at sea, only returning to land to nest. For the winter months, puffins shed their outer bright colored beak and white breast feathers, leaving behind a dark and dull beak and and body. When they return for summer, they are once again sporting their colored beaks and white tuxedos, and iconic and fancy look for the wild."

Homer vs. Halibut Cove, if you could, what would you choose? πŸ€”

Located a 25-minute boat ride from Homer, Halibut Cove is a private community only accessible by water or air. It's surrounded by the mountainous beauty of Kachemak Bay State Park with no roads and no grocery stores. Most residents here are seasonal but some stay year round. ❄️

So let's dream. What would you rather? The remote solitude that Halibut Cove offers or the convenience and community of Homer? πŸ€”

It's called an 'eagle eye' for a reason! πŸ¦… In fact, bald eagles have some of the sharpest eyesight in the entire animal kingdom. They can even spot a fish from several hundred feet up in the air!

Spring is upon us! Things are greening up and we will be seeing your smiling faces soon!

05/13/2022

I was out with some friends one evening last week. We drove out to a spot we hoped to get some shorebirds. What we didn't expect is a bunch of eagles eating off the carcass of some fish that were left on the beach. We stopped the truck and got out, belly crawling to get closer to the birds without spooking them. I had both a super zoom lens with me as well as a wide-angle set up. The evening sky was mostly cloudy with some sun poking through here and there and a beautiful ray of light shining out over the ocean. Suddenly an adult Bald Eagle came in low from our left. We got ready, locked on the bird as it came in, and hit the shutter when he lifted up, flapping its wings as it landed. The whole thing was seconds long, but it is burned into my brain in slow motion. One of my buddies already shared his photo of that moment, and it's brilliant. It's neat to see how different, yet similar our edits are. We both caught slightly different poses at slightly different angles. All in all, I'm super happy with how this shot came out. I hope you enjoy!

Welcome back, friends! πŸ€—

Seeing the Sandhill Cranes arrive back in Homer always brings a smile to our faces. 😊 With their arrival comes longer daylight, spring weather, and an excited energy that can be felt around town.

It also means the festival is near! Will we see you there this May 4th-8th?

When the shot is so good, it should be ill-eagle. πŸ¦…

This past February, participants of the workshop spent their days exploring our coastline while photographing these majestic raptors. As you can tell, the results were im-peck-able! 🐦

Feeling gloomy? Grab some oysters! These tiny briny treats are high in vitamin D and loaded with zinc, so there's no tastier way to combat the affects of winter.

Homer's local oysters are grown in the sparkling waters of Kachemak Bay, making them some of the most pristine and northernmost oysters grown in the world.

Grab some, it's what the doctor orders! 🐚 β˜€οΈ

Seeing orcas in Kachemak Bay is such a special (and lucky) sight! πŸ€

Why?

Because the orcas you see in our bay are not residents in our area, just purely visitors. Each year their presence is never certain or consistent! These orcas live in other areas of southern Alaska and choose to visit our waters just for a few hours at a time.

If you spot an orca, consider yourself a very lucky human! ✨

Have you seen orcas in Kachemack Bay? Tell us about it!

"Relaxing, calming, inspiring, nurturing are just a few feelings that pass thru my mind. Alaska has touched my soul and left one hell of an impression. I often dream about a place where man has and still can walk amongst the greatest of beasts. A place so wild and untamed that one can only believe it’s just in their imagination.

With only a handful of these places still existing today, we must gain a greater appreciation for the way things once were and help protect the few remaining places left. We don't need to change everything, we don't need to tear things apart, we don't need to leave our mark."

Do you agree?

This photo was taken in Katmai National Park and Preserve, only a short plane ride from Homer.

Sea otters love Homer too. There could be close to 4,000 of these furry guys inhabiting Kachemak Bay alone! 🐻 🐚
