Earl Allen, their father, owned a Midwestern distribution for “Houn Dawg” dog food during the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Earl (now deceased) and John also owned AA Kennel
s together, one of the finest American Foxhound kennels in the country, producing many generations of local, state, national and international field and bench champions. The story of Black Gold Dog Food begins one Christmas Eve around 1995. After supper while discussing the good old days, the Allen family decided to do something about the lack of a really great dog food on the market. Which led them to developing their specific scientific formula providing the exact nutrition that their dogs needed to perform and to look their best. They named the company Black Gold, after one of their great Foxhound champions; Black Gold is the dog pictured on most of the bags. Today
Black Gold Pet Foods, Inc. is still owned and operated by the Allen family in Vienna Missouri. and headed by John Allen, the youngest son. Besides having the best dog food in the country, they are also kennel operators with over 100 years combined experience with dogs. John and his business partner Alan Bauer still raise and show a few foxhounds and coonhounds. Their kennel currently houses the 2009 National Champion and the 2005 National Champion and two-time AKC National Specialty Champion Foxhound. They have just started experimental breeding of Treeing Walker Coonhounds.
