FWP is advising anglers that portions of the Big Hole, Beaverhead, Clark Fork, Madison, Ruby and Sun rivers, as well as the Jefferson River and Silver Bow Creek in their entirety, will be closed to all fishing daily from 2 p.m. to midnight, effective at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10. The restrictions will stay in effect until conditions improve.

Correction: It was stated that the entire Clark Fork River will be under hoot-owl restrictions starting July 10 at 2 p.m. Only the portion of the Clark Fork from the mouth of Warm Springs Creek to the mouth of Rock Creek will be under hoot-owl restrictions.

BITTERROOT RIVER
Hoot owl restriction from RM 54.9 to RM 83

Hoot owl restrictions (2:00 PM to midnight) will be in effect for the Bitterroot River from Veteran’s Bridge at Hamilton to the confluence of the East and West Forks Bitterroot River beginning 2 PM on July 19.

Maximum daily water temperatures measured on the Bitterroot have reached or exceeded 66 degrees Fahrenheit for three consecutive days July 14-16. This satisfies angling-restriction criterion outlined in ARM 12.5.507.

These restrictions will remain in place until lifted by FWP administrative action when water temperature does not exceed 66 degrees Fahrenheit for three consecutive days (ARM 12.5.508) and adequate flows are present.

Question of the week: March 1 is the day that new hunting & fishing licenses will be for sale, and hunters can apply for all special limited licenses and permits. Stop by a FWP office, license provider, or go online. Hard copies of regulations are hitting the shelves now, and digital copies will be available very soon. Check in each week to see answers to the question we're hearing the most!

All restrictions on rivers in Region 2, including the Bitterroot and the Clark Fork, will be lifted. In addition, restrictions on the Gallatin and East Gallatin in Region 3, southwestern Montana, will be lifted.
Angling restrictions are implemented based on several considerations: stream flow, water temperatures, angling pressure and other angling restrictions in the area that may divert use to waterways where circumstances are increasing stress on the fishery.
Before you go fishing, please be aware of the conditions. Numerous other rivers in Montana are also under fishing restrictions. For a full list, visit FWP’s website: https://fwp.mt.gov/news/current-closures-restrictions/waterbody-closures.

A full fishing closure will go into effect for the Beaverhead River starting at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1.

The closure extends for the entire Beaverhead River—from its confluence with the Big Hole River to Clark Canyon Dam. The closure will remain in place until lifted by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks when water temperatures moderate and angling pressure is not expected to cause undue stress to fish.

Flows to the Beaverhead River from Clark Canyon Dam will transition from typical irrigation releases of about 300 cubic feet per second to the minimum overwinter release of 25 cubic feet per second over a five-day period, beginning Sept. 1. This flow change is occurring several weeks earlier than normal due to severe drought projections in the Clark Canyon Reservoir drought plan.

Flow reduction, coupled with forecasted hot temperatures, are expected to cause excess stress to individual fish. This could adversely affect the fishery, prompting the full fishing closure.

Fishing restrictions, such as hoot owl restrictions and full closures, are designed to protect fish that become more susceptible to disease and mortality when conditions, such as low flows and high water temperatures, combine with other stressors, including catch-and-release fishing. Restrictions are in place for other Montana waterbodies. Anglers can find a statewide list of current restrictions at fwp.mt.gov/news/current-closures-restrictions.

All stress to fish at this time of year is cumulative, and anglers should consider fishing in cooler waters during times of low flows and high water temperatures in rivers. Anglers can help reduce stress for fish by following these practices when catching and releasing fish where fishing is allowed, though fish mortality may still occur:

- Fish during the coolest times of day, where permitted.
- Land the fish quickly.
- Wet your hands before handling the fish.
- Keep the fish in water as much as possible.
- Remove the hook gently. Using artificial lures with single and barbless hooks can make hook removal faster and easier.
- If the fish is hooked deeply, you may have to cut the line at the fish’s mouth or consider keeping it if regulations allow.
- Let the fish recover before releasing it.
