Region 3912 produced an X2.2/2b X-ray flare (R3-Strong radio blackout) on 08 Dec at 0906 UTC (0206 ET). A CME was observed in LASCO coronagraph imagery, beginning at approximately 08/0924 UTC (0224 ET), likely associated with the X-flare. Forecasters are analyzing the CME to determine if there is an Earth-directed component. Appropriate Watches/Warnings/Forecasts will be issued, pending the results of that analysis. Looks like clouds will cover most of the upper Midwest, but might be worth taking some test shots with any breaks in the clouds tomorrow night into Friday.

A G1 (Minor) watch has been issued for 28 Nov and a G2 (Moderate) watch was issued for 29 Nov due to the arrival of a CME associated with a filament eruption that took off the Sun late on 25 Nov.

If you have clear skies above the 45th parallel (northern MI, WI, MN, etc) you may have a shot at catching the northern lights right now/tonight. This rather unexpected activity looks like it may be the result of enhanced solar winds from a coronal hole currently facing earth.

Aurora update- it’s been a quiet couple weeks since the surprise show on 11/8-11/9.

Currently there are no major sunspots facing earth, but that shouldn’t last long. There is a group rotating into view from the east limb (left side looking at the sun). The green/yellow cluster on the left image, and the “brighter” activity on the right image will be facing earth over the next few days. Then we hope for a flare that produces a CME directed at earth. Stay tuned.
Reminder- you must have clear skies to see the aurora when it happens.

I’ll continue to provide Aurora activity updates and possible northern lights for beginners tours.

Mark your diaries for the 2026/27 aurora season could be a big one!

It's no wonder Michigan has a long list of favorites, notable for its great restaurants, unique holiday traditions, lakeside escapes, and more.

X-Flare!

A returning sunspot region now reassigned AR 3869 just produced a strong X3.3 solar flare at 03:57 UTC (Oct 24). A type II radio emission with an estimated velocity of 610 km/s was recorded. This event will be associated with a coronal mass ejection (CME) based on dimming following the event. Because the flare location is located off the east limb, it will be directed mostly away from Earth. A further update will be provided once coronagraph imagery is updated.

Stay tuned to SolarHam for the latest details.
