FROM ANTIETAM TO HARPERS FERRY — One of my favorite views in the entire Civil War landscape…
When looking southeast toward the Harpers Ferry gap from the old War Department Observation Tower along the Sunken Road (Bloody Lane), the ridges of Maryland Heights, Bolivar Heights, and Loudoun Heights are all visible. From September 15-16, 1862, elements of both armies began entering the Antietam Valley. Gathering on the high ground around Sharpsburg, Lee's vanguard had retreated from the fighting on South Mountain and General Jackson's troops, minus a force that was left behind under A. P. Hill to organize the men and material captured at Harpers Ferry, began marching up.
When putting together — September Still Speaks: Antietam, A Visual Companion to Pristine and Hallowed Ground — a few years ago, I wanted to include this perspective as it can provide some extremely beneficial takeaways for appreciating the scenic and rural countryside where these momentous events transpired.
