The Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat

The Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society (HARS), the non-profit organization that maintains and operates the beloved Pride of the Susquehanna riverboat, announced last week that the riverboat will not be launched this 2024 season.

While the Pride of the Susquehanna successfully passed all other requirements of the annual Coast Guard inspection, an unforeseen and complex repair is needed to the men's restroom waste tank to launch the vessel. This unexpected issue requires significant time, expertise, and resources to complete.

"We understand this news may be disappointing, but we appreciate your patience and continued support," said Lori Ribbans, Chair of the Society. "HARS is dedicated to ensuring that the presence of a riverboat on the Susquehanna at Harrisburg is preserved for future generations, and we look forward to welcoming you aboard for the 2025 season."

The Society has contacted all individuals with existing reservations and refunds have been processed.

HARS relies on the dedication of its volunteer members and community support to maintain the Pride of the Susquehanna and provide a unique riverboat experience for all. Donations to help finance the repair can be made on the HARS website www.hbgriverboat.org, or by contacting the HARS office.

We are sad that the necessary repairs to our boat are delaying the two Memorial Day cruises that had been planned for today. Postponing our two dinner cruises for veterans was a difficult decision that had to be made. Please enjoy the long weekend, remember the fallen with us, and know how much we look forward to the rescheduled cruises in July. May your Memorial Day be meaningful.

Disappointing news ...but safety first!

The Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society (HARS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, announces a delay to the start of its 2024 cruise season for the beloved Pride of the Susquehanna. Due to an unexpected repair requirement by the U.S. Coast Guard, the historic paddlewheel boat will not be operational until Thursday, July 4th, 2024.

“We understand this news may be disappointing, especially for those with reservations in June,” said Lori Ribbans, Chair of the HARS. “The Society is dedicated to the safe operation of the Pride of the Susquehanna and prioritizes responsible stewardship of our Riverboat. The Coast Guard’s identified repair is essential to ensure that the vessel meets all safety regulations.”

HARS is currently contacting via email all guests with reservations for cruises scheduled in May and June, including the popular Memorial Day Veterans Cruise. That event is rescheduled to July 14, 2024. Registrants will be contacted as to their time preference. The Society apologizes for any inconvenience and will offer guests with existing bookings a full refund or the opportunity to reschedule their cruise for a later date in the season.

The Pride of the Susquehanna is not owned by a corporation or government entity. HARS, a non-profit organization, relies on revenue from cruises, events, grants, donors, and sponsors to maintain and operate the historic vessel. The good news is…we are delighted to be hosting close to 200 veterans on Memorial Day for dinner cruises on Monday, May 27….the sad news is, the boat is now full that evening so we are no longer accepting additional registrations for those cruises. But in more good news, veterans can ride FREE for any public sightseeing cruise throughout the season! If you cannot make it on Memorial Day, please let us treat you throughout the summer!🚢

Always bittersweet. The Pride was pulled out of the Susquehanna today, after a fabulous 35th anniversary season. Thanks to everyone who made our landmark season so joyful —(oh, how we love those princesses, superheroes and seniors!) and to the media for helping us boost ridership by sharing our scenic views and pure love for the ‘burg.
