Hanukkah: The Festive of Lights begins this year at dusk Dec 25th. We love all the food associated with this very special week. Potato Latkes (with applesauce for the purists, I like sour cream) and Brisket are a staple. Every family has their spin on these items. Matt loves his Kugel made with egg noodles. There always must be a beautiful loaf or 2 of Challah bread, leftovers make for a great French toast in the morning. Please don’t forget the Sufganiyot (jelly donuts) or Rugelach for dessert!

It’s so official!

Ah, Christmas in Portugal! It's still a day steeped in many old traditions. We abstain from meat on Christmas Eve, so the popular dish is Bacalhau, Salted Cod. There are so many ways to prepare the national dish. Boiled with potatoes and broccoli rabe (at mom's house). Fried into light croquettes call Pasteis de Bacalhau, as an appetizer. Baked in the over with potatoes, onions hard boiled eggs and plenty of garlic. Or Bela's favorite- Bacalhau a Bras- served with French fries, egg sauce with parsley and olives. However it's served, a glass of wine is always at the ready.
Bolo de Rei. Yes, it's a fruit cake. But it is light and airy and the fruits are Port infused-more like a sweet bread. May I also have a glass of Port, please? Should you find the fava bean in the cake, you buy next year's. There is also usually a small toy baked in for the children to find.
