Good stuff happening here!

An elephant’s trunk is one of the most versatile body parts in the animal kingdom! Made up of complex musculature, trunks are powerful enough to lift up to 700 pounds and dexterous enough to pick up a single blade of grass.

Trunks are also superior sniffers, boasting more scent receptors than any other mammal—including dogs. This sense of smell helps elephants locate food, water, and mates and it’s helping us identify methods to keep them safe.

Working with local communities in Kenya, we’re evaluating the use of “smelly elephant repellant” which uses locally sourced, potent-smelling ingredients (like chili and ginger) to deter elephants from raiding crops. This solution helps reduce instances of human-wildlife conflict and retaliatory killings, protecting elephants and human livelihoods.

We hope that remedies like this will allow us all to coexist peacefully with wildlife.

Botswana is home to the largest share of elephants at 130,000 – 150,000, thanks to both government and non-government organizations’ conservation efforts. Natalie Patton and Phatsimo Kwenane from the Embassy's Regional Environmental Office visited Elephant Havens Wildlife Foundation in Maun, which is an Ambassador's Special Self Help Fund small grants recipient.

I always wonder what they are thinking when I photograph wildlife, but especially primates. After hours of trekking through the appropriately named Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, I was delighted to find this impressive Silverback Gorilla and especially by how relaxed he was with my presence.
