Take a glimpse into Montana’s history. In 1894, voters chose Helena over Anaconda as the state capital by fewer than 2,000 votes, shaping the state's future. Construction of the Montana State Capitol began in 1899, and it was officially dedicated on July 4, 1902. More than a century later, it remains the heart of Montana’s government and a lasting reminder of that historic vote. 🏛️

Before big-box stores and online shopping, Helena had Capital Hill Mall. Opening in 1965, it was more than just a mall—it was where you shopped, met up with friends, and maybe even got lost as a kid. From Hennessy’s to JCPenney, this local landmark held over 50 years of memories before closing in 2017 and being demolished in 2019. What was your favorite store or best memory of the mall? Let us know in the comments! ⬇️

From silver screens to outdoor scenes—The Base Camp has called this historic building home since 2007, but before that, it was the Gaslight Cinema, a beloved theater that lit up Helena’s nights from 1975 to 2006. Originally opening with "The Four Musketeers" and "Report to the Commissioner" the Gaslight was a fixture of Helena’s Urban Renewal era. While the films have faded, adventure still plays on—just with a different kind of gear. 🎥➡️⛺️

The Caretaker’s Cabin is one of the last surviving remnants of Helena’s once-thriving red-light district along today’s South Park Street. The small extensions at the back, known as cribs, functioned as one-room offices where women conducted business. To contain activity, a wall was built along the east side of Reeder’s Alley, covering the cribs’ windows to prevent solicitation into the alley. Interestingly, while the red-light district flourished nearby, Reeder’s Alley itself was never part of it.

Today, the cabin has a much sweeter story to tell, now home to Cotton-Top Pastries where history meets handmade treats. 🏚️🥐

Nestled in a valley west of Helena, the Broadwater Hotel and Natatorium embodied Colonel Charles A. Broadwater’s late-19th-century vision—transforming a natural hot spring into a lavish retreat for miners, pioneers, and tourists.

Featuring grand architecture, including a 45-foot observation tower and the era’s largest covered pool, the hotel closed in 1941. Today, its preserved tower stands near Smith School, a lasting tribute to Broadwater’s legacy and Helena’s rich history. 🗼

Hidden in the mountains north of Avon, Montana, Lost Cabin Ranch was a unique winter retreat when it opened in 1933-34. Founded by John and Marguerite Quigley, the ranch gave guests a true Montana winter experience. Skiers didn’t take lifts—they rode to the slopes on a massive wooden sled towed by a bulldozer, known as the ‘caterpillar snow train.’

The lodge hosted just 8-10 guests at a time, offering hearty ranch meals and cozy accommodations. But in 1942, as WWII reshaped the country, the Quigleys left Montana to aid the war effort, and Lost Cabin never reopened. By 1946, John had moved on to his next venture—Frontier Town on MacDonald Pass. ❄️🏔️
