Wanless Lake - it’s one of our favorite high mountain lakes in the Cabinet Wilderness. A great spot for our guests to fish and camp overnight.

Our guide school students get the opportunity to not only help the season guides spot game for the hunters, but they also get to help pack the harvested game out. It’s a great way to see some of the most remote beautiful country Montana has to offer.

A very important part of being a licensed professional guide is understanding how wild game traverse and move around the backcountry in which they live. You have to go out into their habitat and terrain to learn their feeding habits. You have to learn the patterns and the trails that they take all times of the year, not just in the fall. You need to know where they go for food and water to become an effective hunter/guide.
Here at Big Sky packer & Guide School, our students spend many hours looking for tracks, looking for where critters bed down at night and where they are in the morning when you go back. In order to be a successful Guide, you must learn how to spot critters maybe miles away.

Take an inside look at one of our base camps!
This is our River Base camp. It features a 16 x 24 cook tent with two 6 foot porches. It has a full size wood stove for heat , a full size cook stove, and oven and lots of room for our clients. We have several wall tents set up for the clients with the woodstove and comfortable cots. This camp also features a tent with a hot shower.

Elk Creek Outfitting in collaboration with Big Sky Packer & Guide School have teamed up with Article 4 to host a top-of-the-line long range shooting course.
This two day course was designed to give our clients/hunters every opportunity to harvest an animal when the opportunity presents itself. Jason, a combat veteran is the lead instructor. He has been hunting for more than 30 years in Montana and brings the same passion that he has in the field to his precision courses. Throughout his US Army career, Jason developed his skills and accomplishment as a Rifle Builder AB Ballistician who developed two wildcat long range cartridges.
We at want to give you every opportunity to be successful on your hunt and this is a great way to build on your skills.
For the introductory price of $2495 you can secure a spot in our class. This price includes all of your meals and lodging and two days of intense schooling that we believe we can help you make your shot count.

At Big Sky Packer & Guide School, we instill the importance of morals, ethics, and teamwork as well as being good stewards of the land. Our graduates are well rounded who can get along with not only other guides and outfitters in the forest but also other hunters.One of our favorite highlights from our school is our end of the year shooting competition. The winner gets to harvest a bison. The whole class gets to participate in the harvest and uses their newly acquired skills to field dress the bison and pack it out. The meat is then prepared by our incredible chef for the whole lodge to enjoy! We also have other friendly competitions to see who gets the buffalo robe and skull.
