HerrinFesta Italiana Announces Retirement of Longtime President Cris Trapani and Welcomes New Leadership

Herrin, IL - After 27 years of dedicated leadership, Cris Trapani, President of HerrinFesta Italiana, is set to retire. Cris led the community festival with passion and commitment, following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Bob Ferrari. We extend our deepest gratitude for his fearless leadership, countless hours of dedication, and unwavering support to Festa, the Herrin Chamber of Commerce, and the community.

Throughout his tenure, Cris has been a pivotal figure in maintaining and enhancing the spirit of HerrinFesta Italiana, ensuring it remains a beloved tradition that celebrates our town's rich heritage. His efforts, along with the community's support and participation, have significantly contributed to the festival's success and its ability to give back to local charities and organizations.

As Cris steps into retirement, ready to enjoy more time with his family, the committee has taken this opportunity to restructure and appoint new leadership. The committee is excited to announce that longtime Vice President Joey Helleny, who has been instrumental in the festival's success, and Treasurer Kelly Green, known for her financial insight and community involvement, will take the helm as co-chairs of HerrinFesta Italiana. 🇮🇹🇺🇸 As we celebrate HerrinFesta Italiana and honor Memorial Day, let's take a moment to recognize the remarkable contributions of Fiorello La Guardia, another Italian-American hero whose service and dedication left a lasting impact on our nation.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Fiorello La Guardia, who would later become the famous mayor of New York City, was also a World War I pilot?

In 1917, at the age of 35, La Guardia was a freshman congressman when the United States entered World War I. Determined to prove the patriotism of Italian-Americans, he took an unpaid leave from Congress and joined the Army's nascent air service. La Guardia was sent to Foggia, Italy—a place close to his heart as it was his father's birthplace—to help train American aviation cadets under Italian instructors.

Despite limited flying experience, La Guardia's leadership and dedication shone through. He quickly became known for his ability to cut through red tape and his commitment to his "boys," ensuring they were well-fed and protected. His leadership extended beyond training as he eventually flew missions against Austro-Hungarian and German forces.

One of his most memorable moments was a solo cross-country flight during which he crash-landed but emerged unscathed. His resilience and bravery earned him the respect and admiration of his peers, known affectionately as "Fiorello’s Foggiani."

After the war, La Guardia's dedication to public service continued. He became a beloved figure as the mayor of New York City, known for his efforts to combat corruption and improve the city’s infrastructure. His advocacy for veterans and public service reforms left a lasting legacy.

Fiorello La Guardia's story is a testament to the profound impact that Italian-Americans have had on our nation, both on the battlefield and in public service. His life reminds us of the values of courage, dedication, and service to others.

As we honor Memorial Day, let's remember and celebrate heroes like Fiorello La Guardia, who exemplify the spirit of Italian-American patriotism and service.

As we celebrate HerrinFesta Italiana and honor Memorial Day today, we want to take a moment to recognize the incredible contributions of Italian-Americans to our nation's military history. Today, we highlight the story of one extraordinary hero, Sgt. John Basilone.

Did you know that John Basilone, an Italian-American Marine, is the only enlisted Marine to receive both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross during World War II?

John Basilone was born to Italian immigrant parents in Buffalo, New York, and grew up in Raritan, New Jersey. Before joining the Marine Corps, he served three years in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Philippines.

During the Battle for Henderson Field on Guadalcanal in October 1942, Sgt. Basilone and his machine gun sections held off an overwhelming Japanese force for nearly two days. Despite being vastly outnumbered and running low on ammunition, he fought valiantly, earning the Medal of Honor for his bravery.

In February 1945, during the first day of the invasion of Iwo Jima, Basilone single-handedly destroyed a Japanese blockhouse and led a Marine tank to safety under heavy fire. Tragically, he was killed in action, but his heroism earned him the Navy Cross posthumously.

John Basilone's extraordinary bravery and sacrifice have been honored with numerous accolades, including having military facilities and U.S. Navy destroyers named after him. His legacy continues to inspire us all.

General Douglas MacArthur described him as “a one-man army,” highlighting the immense impact of his actions.

As we remember and honor all those who have served, let’s recognize incredible contributions of Italian-American heroes like John Basilone, whose courage and dedication exemplify the spirit of patriotism.

🇮🇹🇺🇸 Celebrating Italian Contributions to American Military History

This Memorial Day, we want to take the time to honor the contributions of Italian-Americans to the U.S. military. From the Civil War to World War II and beyond, Italian-Americans have shown exceptional bravery and patriotism.

During World War II, more than 1.5 million Italian-Americans served, making up about 10% of the U.S. armed forces. Fourteen of these brave individuals were awarded the Medal of Honor for their heroic actions.

Among them was Sgt. John Basilone, the only Marine to receive both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross for his extraordinary bravery at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima.

Italian-Americans also played a vital role in the Civil War. Between 5,000 and 10,000 Italian-Americans fought for the Union. Notable figures included Col. Luigi Palma di Cesnola, who commanded a Union cavalry unit and received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Aldie. Brigadier General Edward Ferrero commanded the 51st New York Regiment and later a division of the United States Colored Troops, showcasing the diverse contributions of Italian-Americans.

In World War I, thousands of Italian immigrants enlisted to fight for their adopted country. Michael Valente, the only Italian-American to win the Medal of Honor in WWI, was recognized for his heroism in breaking the Hindenburg Line.

The contributions of Italian-Americans have greatly influenced the course of American history and exemplify the strong bond between Italy and the United States.

We express our deepest gratitude to all Italian-American service members and their families. Your bravery and sacrifices are remembered and honored this Memorial Day.
