Yesterday, our first (out of two) groups left to hike in the deeps of PA. For the next few days, they will backpack their way through 48.7 miles of inhabited parts along with our two expert guides, Cody, who ran the trip last year and Julie, an extraordinarily accomplished hiker with Appalachian Trail hiking creds. Over the 5 days, they’ll hike high elevation and sleep overnight in both clearings and forests and discover the connection nature provides, while learning leadership, navigation, emergency medicine, water filtration, meal prep, and wilderness first aid. Without any cell service, we will be tracking and communicating with them using a Garmin satellite device. What was a cool thing they witnessed so far? Today they saw cougar tracks! Have questions for the crew? Ask below in the comments!

Florence Merrimack Bailey. An idol in our nature loving world. One of the first nationally recognized female ornithologists of her time. She dedicated her life to educating about birds - their protection, vitality and more. Her unwavering love of nature inspires us to continue learning and seeing all that it has to offer. Shes written several books and penned articles on encoring folks to study natural sciences and activism to not only birds, but Mother Nature as whole.

An extra day of February = an extra day of BHM. Did you know every U.S. president has designated February black history month since 1976. At Adventure Explorations, we love the outdoors and those who celebrate nature in all it’s glory. Read below to find out why we’re inspired.
1: Dr. John Francis. In 1971, Dr. Francis witnessed an oil spill in the San Francisco Bay and made it his mission to walk everywhere instead of motorized vehicles. After a few months, he took a vow of silence that would last 17 years. He spent 22 years traveling either by foot or boat. He founded the environmental nonprofit, Planetwalk. He is known as the Planetwalker and continues to teach about environment related subjects.
2: Akuna Robinson. The triple crown of the hiking world, according to The LA Times. Robinson completed the three most challenging U.S. trails: the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), the Appalachian Trail (AT) and the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). Robinson is a huge advocator for mental health as he has openly discussed being a survivor of depression and anxiety who has connected with nature. He won the 2022 George Mallory Award for outdoor explorers.
3: Robert Taylor. He was the first African American to hike through both the AT & Pacific Crest trails, which happened in the late 90s. Taylor has been open about his struggles while hiking and even before. Throughout it all, he stepped out of his comfort zone to break barriers and set records.
4: Soloman Brown. He was the first African American employee of the Smithsonian and worked there for 54 years. He provided illustrated maps and species and educated himself on natural history.

Lace up, we're going on an adventure. Did you know we customize your hike to fit your preferences? Send us a DM or live chat us to learn more! And check out what we think about 2 of our favorite hiking shoes below ⬇️
1. Vasque Sundowner
This legendary boot is the definition of durability. With a single piece leather upper and minimal seems this boot will last you a lifetime. Although the timeless design of the boot is appealing to some, it does not have the same s*x appeal of its modern day competition.

2. Salomon Quest 4
Widely believed to be the best boot on the market the Salomon Quest offers an excellent mix of stability, comfort, and traction. These boots shine brightest with some weight in your pack and miles of trail ahead. Just don’t expect to buy only one pair.

James Beckwourth had a major contribution to Western America’s early exploration. He was the only African American who documented and recorded his journey from Florida’s Everglades to the Pacific Ocean as well as from Canada’s south to Mexico’s north. Beckwourth worked on his autobiography between 1854 and 1855; the book was published in 1856 and entitled “The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth, Mountaineer, Scout, and Pioneer, and Chief of the Crow Nation of Indians.” It was during this time that he became one of the most noteworthy mountain men of the era, and he was present for and even participated in many of the landmark events in the history of the American West.
From Edward Wallace: “He founded El Pueblo, he owned the most prestigious hotel in Santa Fe. He was out west in California during the revolution and the gold rush. He trapped with Kit Carson and Jim Bridger. He lived such a fascinating life to have come from where he was, being born a slave.”

Beckwourth worked at both Fort Vasquez and El Pueblo. He blazed trails across both the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada for westward settlers, and he was present for the Bear Flag Revolt, the short-lived California Republic, the western front of the Mexican-American War, and then the California Gold Rush.

This is an illustration of Jim Beckwourth dressed in Native American garb, from his memoirs. Beckwourth spent a decade or more living among the Crow Nation in Wyoming and Colorado.

Today, we’re celebrating a group that was started by its founder, Philip Henderson, who created an organization uniquely for the black climbing community. With an incredible story, and a 2022 Everest Summit, the Full Circle Everest team made history as the first all-Black team to stand atop the summit, the highest mountain on earth.

For a CNN article shortly after their achievement and on Instagram, Mr. Henderson stated, “there is representation of Black people in mountaineering, climbing and the overall outdoor industry, but our stories are not being told.”

Rosemary Saal, also a Full Circle member, added to it saying, “It is an expedition that is certainly about climbing. It is about spending time in the mountains, but it is also about building community, global community. And it’s about changing the narrative for the Black community, particularly in the United States and how we interact with outdoor spaces.”
Saal is used to scaling literal and metaphorical heights. She was a member of an all-Black team that hiked Denali in Alaska and another that reached the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.
But being part of Full Circle, she says, is different. The mountaineering community is relatively small, and Everest is the name that nearly everyone in the world can recognize.
“This mountain gets attention,” says another Full Circle member, Abby Dione.
Dione lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she owns and operates Coral Cliffs Climbing Gym. As one of only two Black women in the United States to own a climbing gym, she’s passionate about giving women of color ways to see themselves in the outdoors.
“The goal (of Full Circle) is to demystify this process,” Dione says. “Regardless of the mountain in question, the real goal for us is about reverse engineering things for folks.”
About 4,000 people have summited Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak. And only eight of them have been Black. That is one of the reasons that Full Circle, a group of Black climbers and mountaineers, was formed.
