Terry Maciej is an athlete, coach, artist and outdoorsman. Born in 1939, Terry is a lifelong resident of the Iron Range. He was a standout athlete for the Nashwauk Colts from 1954 to 1957 playing baseball, football, basketball and track. He graduated from Bemidji State University in 1961 with a major in art education and a minor in physical education. He is married to Carol Ann Savolainen (Nashwauk High School ’58) and they have 4 children. He started teaching and coaching in Nashwauk in 1961 and continued in Hibbing from 1967 through 1997. While at Nashwauk schools Terry’s task was to build an art program for all grade levels. Classes were taught anywhere from the Home Ec. In the 30 years with the Hibbing school district, the values he learned as a youth in Nashwauk and the work ethic he learned as a teacher guided every task. Athletic programs from Junior High, Junior Varsity and Varsity all benefited from his coaching philosophy–all who try are given an opportunity to play. Young athletes were respected as individuals and always encouraged to have fun with the sport. This philosophy gained the respect of both coaching peers and athletes themselves. One athlete, Kevin McHale, cited Terry Maciej as one of the most influential people in his career when interviewed at the 1987 NBA All-Star game. “He wanted us to love the game; he wanted us to have fun.” Kevin invited Terry to be a guest of his family at his 1999 enshrinement to the NBA hall of fame. Terry’s most recognized talent is his artistic ability. From the early days of teaching in the Nashwauk schools to his more recent success as a nationally accomplished artist, Terry has used his appreciation of the landscape and wildlife of northern Minnesota as inspiration for his art. Scenes depicting thick pine stands, cool gray skies and a variety of wildlife typical of the Iron Range have found their way into homes and galleries around the world. He has exhibited at shows throughout the United States including Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois and Massachusetts. Achievements include 12 limited edition prints with three sold-out editions, illustrator of three published books and featured as artist/outdoorsman in editorial appearing in the Eastern Itascan, Hibbing Daily Tribune, Duluth News-Tribune, Northland Outdoors magazine and Wildlife Art magazine. In the Millennium edition of the Hibbing Daily Tribune Terry Maciej was selected as one of the “100 individuals who helped shape the community’s of the Iron Range.”

Terry Maciej’s wildlife art has benefited many organizations dedicated to wildlife preservation and stewardship. Donations of artwork, live demonstrations and active participation in the National Turkey Federation, Turn in Poachers, Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever have contributed countless thousands of dollars. One of Terry’s art prints was selected as a “print of the year” by the National Ruffed Grouse Society and his substantial donations to the Minnesota Deer Hunter’s Association earned him an Honorary Lifetime Membership. In 2008 Terry was selected as the artist of the year by Minnesota Turn in Poachers (TIP).
