in West Virginia means Bridge Day! If you’re ever in our neck of the woods, check it out!

Bridge Day is an annual event held on the third Saturday of October at the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, West Virginia. Here are some key facts:

1. Base Jumping and Rappelling: It is one of the only days the New River Gorge Bridge is open to pedestrians, attracting hundreds of BASE jumpers who leap 876 feet into the gorge below. Rappellers also descend from the bridge, making it a day of extreme sports.
2. Origins: The first Bridge Day was in 1980, marking the anniversary of the bridge’s completion in 1977. It’s grown into a major event, drawing thousands of spectators and participants each year.
3. The Bridge: The New River Gorge Bridge, one of the longest single-span steel arch bridges in the world, is the centerpiece of the event. It’s an iconic landmark in West Virginia.
4. Festival Atmosphere: The event features food vendors, live music, and various exhibitions, making it a full-day festival that celebrates outdoor adventure.
5. Safety: Jumpers are required to have a minimum of 100 prior jumps to participate, and the event is monitored by safety personnel to manage the high-risk activities.
