Look what we found running around our grounds. A nine-banded armadillo!
Did you know: Nine-banded armadillos have a tendency to jump straight up into the air when they are startled? They also can't roll itself into a ball to escape predators!! It had too many bony plates to allow them to curl up. Only one of the twenty-odd varieties of armadillos — the three-banded armadillo— is able to roll up.

Spotted this South Texas beauty at the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse grounds, the Red-bordered Pixie! This butterfly can be found on overcast days or early in the morning/late in the afternoon as it tends to shy away from direct sunlight. It is usually around the Guamuchil tree which uses it as a larval host. Come by and visit the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse and World Birding Center!

We saw one of these beauties floating through our gardens. It’s the Giant Swallowtail, the largest butterfly in the United States. With a wingspan that can measure over 6 inches, this is one butterfly that will definitely catch your attention!
