Thanks to climbing voices like yours, and thanks to the leadership of the Access Fund, Outdoor Alliance, and many other advocacy groups, the EXPLORE act passed the US House this month. This Act helps us safeguard Wilderness climbing in areas like Linville Gorge Wilderness. Our nation-wide work is not done of course.

Happy ! Today, we celebrate these amazing creatures not only for their beauty and grace, but also for the essential part they play in the balance of our ecosystem!
The cedar waxwing is one of the only North American birds that eat mostly fruit! They play a huge role in seed dispersal of our native fruiting trees and plants. This bird got its name due to its preference of the eastern red cedar cones!

Many bird species in the park have migrated to warmer climates for the winter. However, you can still be on the lookout for some birds that have adapted to tolerate the winter conditions. The Northern Cardinal is a permanent resident of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They will forage for winter berries, nuts, and seeds. You are more likely to see these birds in the winter due to their bright red feathers. In the fall, they will molt their feathers and grow a new, brighter layer of plumage. Male Cardinals have this adaptation to find a mate very early in the spring and nest in higher-quality habitats.
