🏎️The Occoneeche Speedway is officially part of Eno River State Park!

The wait is finally over! Over 200 acres of land, including the Historic Occoneechee Speedway, have been added to Eno River State Park.

The acquisition process, which began in 2021, was facilitated by the Eno River Association in collaboration with previous landowners. These new additions to the state park include a four-mile walking trail through NASCAR’s only surviving dirt speedway from 1949 and the James M. Johnston Nature Preserve, a dedicated nature preserve with the N.C. Natural Heritage Program.

An official ribbon cutting to celebrate the acquisition is planned for the spring.

Calling ALL Poets! ✍

After a pause to reevaluate how the program serves our mission, the Town of Hillsborough, NC Government, Mark Bell for Hillsborough, and the Hillsborough Arts Council are thrilled to announce the relaunch of Hillsborough’s Poet Laureate Program!

Since 2010, this respected program has celebrated Hillsborough's literary culture to honor and support talented citizen-poets in the Orange County community.

Applications are NOW OPEN for the Spring 2025 - Spring 2027 term! ✨

📝 We are looking for a citizen-poet at ANY STAGE of their literary journey who cares deeply about community service and poetry advocacy in Hillsborough. They will develop a town presence during their term, nurturing an appreciation of poetry and literature in Hillsborough by conducting readings, workshops, lectures, or presentations in diverse public settings.

📝 Applicants must reside in Orange County, NC, be at least 18 years of age or older, and have the ability to fulfill the responsibilities of a full, two-year term. Applications are due February 28, 2025. The selected Poet Laureate will receive an honorarium of $6,000/term ($3,000/year).

HAC would like to take a moment to thank Jen Jus Write, Host/Curator of the 2022-2024 Last Fridays Roaming Poets series. Jen was a pillar of support for our Literary Arts community, her generous contributions holding space for the return of this program. For these reasons, HAC is honored to recognize Jennifer Daniels as the Honorary Poet Laureate of Hillsborough (2022–2024)!

Go to www.hillsboroughartscouncil.org/poet-laureate to learn more about applicant eligibility, the application, and our jurying process.

Our Story

Hillsborough, North Carolina is a small town with a BIG history. This charming southern getaway was a home for people for thousands of years, as it sat along the Great Trading Path, a Native American network of trails that became a vital part of the fur trade between southern tribes and European settlers.

The town itself was founded in 1754 as the seat of Orange County. As such, Hillsborough was a center for economic, political, and legal action for the surrounding area. It played important parts in the Revolutionary and Civil wars, was home to some of the state’s most important citizens, and became a thriving economic center for eastern North Carolina.

Today, Hillsborough features more than one hundred buildings from he late 18th and early 19th centuries. They are accompanied by fine restaurants and bars, unique art galleries and shops, and outdoor nature areas and walking paths.
