Small Business Saturday is brought to you by Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce and Shop Small
Meet Donna Edwards and Jane Vacchiano, owners of 108 Churton
Nestled beneath Hillsboroughโs Saratoga Grill is 108 Churton, an elegant womenโs boutique showcasing designer clothes and accessories, delightful baby gifts, and locally sourced jewelry. For almost eight years, this charming shop has been expertly curated by four lovely ladies, ensuring a unique and special shopping experience for all.
As you explore the shop, your attention may initially be drawn to the durable and ethically sourced clothing on display. However, customers find themselves captivated as they wander through the store, discovering a wealth of options in home goods, unique gift ideas, and carefully curated books and baby products. Donna Edwards, co-owner of 108 Churton, shared, "People will walk by and just see in the windows and think weโre this little tiny shop, and they walk in and go โoh my gosh!โ" Reflecting on the past, Edwards remembers a time when the current location comprised smaller retail spaces collectively known as Court Square Shops. She played a pivotal role as a partner in this venture for nearly two decades. Despite her extensive background, a career in retail wasn't initially on Edwards' radar. Previously entrenched in the corporate world, she held the position of Director for Training and Development. However, the birth of her daughter at the age of 40 prompted a shift in priorities, awakening her latent creative side.
Her journey into the realm of retail began when she connected with Becky, her initial partner in Court Square Shops. Following a successful collaboration, Becky chose to retire, prompting Edwards to contemplate the path ahead. Fate intervened during the going-out-of-business sale when Jane Vacchiano took a bold step and asked Edwards to consider staying on for the next chapter, which resulted in the opening of 108 Churton. โWe decided we wanted to change the concept. At the time, there was no shopping for women. A shop like this, we thought th
Meet Jeannie Petterson, owner of Uniquitiques, and Kris Berman of Sister Mine Designs ( SistermineDesign )
Situated within a charming, single-story farmhouse along the lively King Street in downtown Hillsborough is Uniquitiques. With its grand front porch draped in vintage decor and the distinctive blue pickup truck parked out front, owner Jeannie Petterson has shared her passion for antiques with our community for decades.
Pettersonโs upbringing was steeped in appreciation for the treasures of the past. Raised in a family of collectors, estate sales, auctions, and visits to antique shops were routine outings. From the furnishings to the silverware, she only knew a life of vintage surroundings: that and music. Petterson fondly recalls, โI was the daughter of a musician. My mother was classically trained and could play anything.โ With her own musical talents somewhat lacking, Petterson went on to pursue her first love, antiques.
In 1993, she and her husband made the move from Wisconsin to North Carolina, where she took a job at a vintage shop in Durham. Following a brief hiatus in her career, Petterson embarked on creating something unique and of her own: Uniquititiques. โThe easiest way to think of it is unique and antique. Itโs not a word, and I thought I was so clever, but saying it and spelling it has been tricky,โ Petterson chuckled as she spoke about the origins of the name. The beloved store, with the playful title, has become a must-visit in the Triangle. What began as a pop-up booth in local malls has evolved into a retail mainstay in Hillsborough for the past 19 years. Yet, it's not just the thoughtfully curated vintage discoveries that captivate visitors; it's also the diverse array of western wear, boots, and artisan-crafted accessories that have garnered attention from both regular shoppers and celebrities alike.
Petterson's keen eye for vintage clothing, a knack for discovering rare accessories, and her Dolly Parton-like disposition h
Meet Wendi and Tod Puckett, owners of Re-Invintaged Home Decor & More
Nestled behind the vibrant teal double doors is one of Hillsboroughโs uniquely curated home decor and gift shops. Re-Invintaged presents a treasure trove of one-of-a-kind finds, locally sourced from over 20 artisans, adding a deeper meaning to the concept of shopping with a purpose. โWe have 23 local handmade vendors,โ explained Wendi Pucket, co-owner of Re-Invitaged. โWe also have a lot of fair trade items, items from India, and the money goes back to the women who make the items.โ
Opening their doors during the challenges of the pandemic, the Pucketts have braved a tumultuous start of their small business venture. However, conquering adversity has become somewhat of a superpower for this dynamic duo, who tackle lifeโs obstacles with resilience and grace. Wendi, who had served as a special education assistant for sixteen and a half years, suddenly faced health challenges that resulted in her leaving her position. This unexpected turn of events led Wendi to explore new interests and hobbies. โWe built a new house, and it was bigger, and my old wreaths didn't fit on my door,โ Wendi shared, โ I went on Pinterest and learned to make one. Next thing I know, friends are like, โOh my gosh, can you make me one?โ.โ After selling her creations on Facebook, at craft shows, and through her Etsy shop, Wendi expanded to a retail space in her friendโs shop in Reidsville, North Carolina. After seeing the success of the storefront, Wendi was inspired to see something similar in Hillsborough. She recalled, โI came home one day and told my husband that our area needs a shop like [hers]. We dont have anything like that.โ He responded, โWhy donโt you do it?โ to which she replied, โI wasnโt talking about me; somebody else needs to do it.โ With a smile, Wendi continued to say, โWithin an hour, we were looking for places.โ

Purple Crow Books SBS
Meet Sharon Wheeler, Owner of Purple Crow Books LLC
Purple Crow Books holds a special place in Hillsborough as the cherished, locally-owned bookstore. With its intimate atmosphere and distinctive charm, this shop provides a welcoming space for book lovers to explore.
For a remarkable fourteen years, Purple Crow has been an integral part of the Hillsborough community. Owner Sharon Wheeler, alongside her dedicated friend and colleague Nancy, has worked to curate a unique selection of books, including works by local authors, niche genres, and popular must-haves. Beyond merely stocking shelves, Wheeler has prioritized fostering connections and a sense of purpose, aiming for her bookshop to be a welcoming sanctuary for everyone in the community. โPurple Crow is a place where people feel safe,โ explained Wheeler.
As an elementary school guidance counselor, Wheeler initially had no plans to open a bookstore. Her career path was originally set on transitioning to the classroom. However, unforeseen circumstances altered her course when her husband fell ill. In a significant pivot, Wheeler redirected her focus to become his caregiver and provide unwavering support. โWhen he died, I was decimated. I was lost,โ Wheeler shared. โI spent some time thinking, what is it I really want to do with my life.โ While caring for her husband, Wheeler had been working part-time at a local bookstore off Churton Street. The people and the supportive community of Hillsborough became her solace and refuge as she navigated the challenges of adapting to a new normal. Faced with the question of โwhatโs next,โ Wheeler opened Purple Crow Books with the mission to be more than a bookstore; she aspired to create a retreat for people, no matter what their circumstances.
Wheeler attributes her long-time success to the steadfast support of her colleagues, the close-knit community, and the encouragement from her fellow small-business owners. โOnce thing about Hillsborough, everyone
Shop Small Saturday Hillsborough Yarn Shop
Meet Anne Derby, owner of the Hillsborough Yarn Shop
Hillsborough Yarn Shop is a place where creativity, skill, and community come together. A haven for knitting and crocheting enthusiasts, this cozy and inviting space has been offering an array of colorful and luxurious yarns for over 17 years.
Derby's love for knitting has been a lifelong passion, dating back to when she was just eight years old. Her mother was the one who introduced her to the craft, and it has always provided her with a sense of comfort. Although her professional background is in biomedical engineering, Derby has longed to explore her creative side more fully. When her younger daughter was on the brink of completing her college education, Derby made the bold decision to follow her dreams and open the Hillsborough Yarn Shop in the heart of Hillsborough's historic district.
In 2006, she settled into a storefront on Churton Street and has since witnessed the evolving landscape of Hillsborough over the years. She fondly recalls the days when Melissa's Jewelry was "around the corner and upstairs," when the Blue Bayou was the trendy spot to visit, and she has seen the downtown area undergo significant transformations with the advent of the Riverwalk and the presence of Weaver Street Market. Derby enthusiastically remarks, "It's all for the best, and it's always exciting when new people come in."
The Hillsborough Yarn Shop represents more than a mere dedication to skill and craftsmanship; it serves as a platform for active participation in environmental advocacy. "We offer natural fibers," Derby proudly asserts. "I like to say that 'no acrylics gave their lives.' While we do carry some cotton and wool options that are machine washable, I donโt want us to be [extracting] petroleum from underground so that we can have yarn you donโt have to wash by hand."
Having retired from RTI in January of this year, Derby and the yarn shop are eager to see what awaits in this new chapter. "We have dreams,"
Meet Lisa Wells, owner of Paws at the Corner
Paws at the Corner
Paws at the Corner has been Hillsboroughโs go-to place for the needs of our fuzzy family members for over 14 years. Apart from playtoys and treats, this business located on the West End has become a trusted resource for our small-town community.
From college coach to professional landscaper, Wells showcases a boundless range of talents. However, itโs been her dedication to her customers and her profound affection for Hillsborough that has made Paws at the Corner a local favorite. โThis is home,โ Wells expressed, her gratitude brimming over, โI couldnโt have picked a better area and a better community.โ Wellsโ genuine appreciation for the support she has received over the years can be felt in her every word. Paws at the Corner became her dream after realizing that the physical demands of her landscaping business were becoming increasingly challenging. With a family background in retail and the unwavering support of her parents, Wells took the leap to open the pet shop on the corner of Nash and Eno Street. During the initial years, she worked on landscaping projects in the early hours of the day and opened the shop mid-morning. Through hard work and determination, Wells succeeded in crafting a space that exudes warmth, friendliness, compassion, and knowledge. โWe have an amazing group of people working here. We arenโt just here to sell something. Weโre here to improve your pet's life.โ Wells emphasized, โItโs not just about ringing the register. We want to be a place that people can count on and get information from, a resource. Thatโs what we really love.โ
You can visit Paws at the Corner at 246 S. Nash Street in Hillsborough. They are open Monday through Saturday from 10 am until 6 pm and Sundays from 12 pm to 5 pm.
