🐢 Tip Thursday: Helping Our Loggerhead Friends!
It’s sea turtle nesting season on Hilton Head, and we can all do our part to protect these amazing creatures. Loggerheads are a threatened species, and as hatchlings emerge, they follow the natural light from the ocean to find their way. Unfortunately, artificial lights can disorient them and how we behave on our beautiful beaches effect them. Here’s how you can help:
DO:
*Turn off outdoor lights at 10 pm (May 1st - October 31st) if they’re visible from the beach.
*Close blinds or drapes on windows that cast light onto the beach at 10 pm.
* Remove all beach gear (umbrellas, chairs, etc.) from the beach at night.
*Fill in any holes you dig and flatten sandcastles before you leave the beach.
*Dispose of trash and recyclables properly in designated bins.
DON’T:
*Leave beach equipment or accessories on the beach overnight.
*Shine bright lights toward the beach or leave interior lights on without blinds drawn.
*🚫Disturb sea turtle nests, nesting turtles, or hatchlings.
