Yesterday, I neglected to say that in the Fall the ocean is warmer than the air, which keeps the first two blocks nearest the sea 5 to 10 degrees warmer than the remainder of the island and the mainland. Which, is the opposite of what happens in Spring. Our azaleas bloom later than those on the golf courses due to the cooler ocean. Yet, we enjoy warmer temperatures in fall and winter. Interesting how it all works.

This time of year the ocean is often quite a bit colder than the air over the island. This causes fog and the temperature just two blocks inland can be 5 degrees warmer. In Bluffton it can be 10 degrees warmer. The first image is of the glow that often precedes the appearance of the sun. it is a sublime and often subtle affair that causes excitement in my heart.

The outer bar was singing baritone and base while the inner bar sang tenor. A lovely chorale. The clouds were the show this morning, some stretched out in lines and others like cotton candy that had been pulled for a bite. The sky was alive all around. My footprints and that of a cat were the only ones on the beach path over the dune.

Like the relentless song of the waves, are the relentless wave of grace from the God of Love.

I love my island. I have loved it since 1968 when I first laid eyes upon it. I fell in love with the vision of it that Charles Fraser and Jim Light shared with me. The beach is the absolute heart of this place for me, where the sun first touches us and where the sea, the sun, the sky and the land come together to illustrate here, what cannot be seen anywhere else, the major elements of life for we human beings, the elements that capture our hearts when seen together. Why else would anyone have thought to develop a place so far off the beaten paths?

Lazy waves brushed the footprints from the beach. You could heave their bristles loudly hit the sand before each stroke slipped up the beach to to do its work. A small deer proceeded me on the beach path but I only caught its hoof prints. It isn't hard to believe the deer enjoy the beach as much as I do. They visit most every morning A tern photo-bombed my sunrise shot which is fine with me. I just wish they would do that in focus.

This is what the LORD says, he who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the LORD Almighty is his name:

Judy and I have lived on this island for 53 years as of last August. We have never seen white on the ground this long. Enough all-ready. And, it has never been this cold for this long. This global warming thing is driving me crazy. Burr. I do love the way the beach path looks, and the first two days of this were beautiful.

The sunset has been more available on the beach. It isn't as cold and usually it isn't as cloudy. The color of the sea verses the colors in the surf and sky was remarkable. I had never seen that before. The last image is looking 180 degrees from the sunset.

This time of year the sun sets far to the South by South West, toward the south end of the island. This makes a great beach sunset, especially when the clouds are high like they are now as a cold front passes over.

The waves were 8 seconds apart, pulses of wind energy stored in the sea, coming to our shore from far away. You couldn't see them until the sand pushed that energy up into a wave to collapse on our beach. The song was beautiful as you wait for the next to rush come in. It was beautiful. The moon got caught in one of our ancient pines that delineate the top of the forest before the lumbermen showed up to harvest the 100 year old loblollies and long leaf pines. What a show this morning.
