Akwesasne, Kanien'kéha for "land where the partridge drums," rests along the shores of the mighty St. Lawrence River. Three nations--Mohawk, United States, and Canada--meet right here. In fact, this Akwesasne waterway is where New York, Quebec and Ontario converge.

Akwesasró:non have maintained a special connection to this beautiful riverway for countless generations, relying on it for sustenance, protection, transportation, inspiration, and recreation.

Through cultural tourism, visitors can support preservation efforts like language revitalization, traditional arts, food sovereignty, and more.

You may be familiar with generic terms like Indian, American Indian, Native American, First Nations or Aboriginal. However, Native nations are diverse and have hundreds of distinct languages. Having the opportunity to learn what we call ourselves, and why, is just one reason cultural tourism exists.

When visiting our lands, a good question to ask your host is "What do you call yourselves?" It can open up an amazing dialogue and lead to a meaningful connection between cultures.

We are Akwesasró:non, the people of Akwesasne. We call ourselves and our Indigenous relatives Onkwehón:we, the original people. Our language is Kanien'kéha.

👉🏼 Here are some common terms you might hear, with a brief explanation of the meanings and origins:

We honor our Veterans and their legacy of service to our homelands.

Akwesasne is home to 24 Kanien'kéha speaking code talkers who helped allied forces achieve victory in World War II.

They were part of an elite group of 500+ Indigenous soldiers deployed during WWII to create coded messages in their languages, codes that remain unbroken to this day. The operation was so top secret that veterans who returned home rarely spoke of their experiences, even after the program was declassified in 1968.

The Mohawk code talkers of Akwesasne were properly recognized in 2016. Their families were presented Congressional Silver Medals during a historic ceremony attended by several hundred dignitaries, veterans, active duty service members, and proud Akwesasró:non. The star of the celebration was Levi Oakes, Akwesasne's last living WWII code talker. He received his medal amid a joyous ovation.

Levi peacefully passed away in 2019 at the age of 94. We continue to honor him, our Mohawk Code Talkers, and all veterans. Niá:wen (thank you) for your courageous service.

📸 WWII veterans Jack Leaf, Levi Oakes and Barney Rourke at the 2017 dedication of the Akwesasne Veterans Memorial at Generations Park. Jack, at 100, is Akwesasne's last surviving WWII vet and a beloved member of our community.
