“We’re hoping to see hatchlings soon! Last evening nest #4 was prepared. This team will visit the nest each evening to look for evidence that the hatchlings are making their way to the surface. Usually the first sign is a “depression” or the sand dropping into the nest showing that the hatchings are moving deep in the nest. Nest #1 is not too far from our home!! So exciting!

The numbers just keep going up! Nests #41 and #42 today! To make this even better #42 is a Green sea turtle. Typically the turtles that come to our beach are Loggerheads, but this is our 2nd Green turtle nest so far this year. Green turtles are typically larger than Loggerheads. We can tell by the crawl (marks left in the sand) the type of turtle that laid the nest.

“Please it’s turtle nesting season. Last night we got a call about fireworks on the west end. Well guess what. You scared off a turtle. She came up and twice she tried to lay her nest.
Please turtles get spooked easily.
If you see a turtle please do not go up to it
Please remove all beach stuff at night
The turtles will get stuck in it
Please fill all holes
Please read the beach rules

“Update from the HB Turtle Patrol - The turtles are here! The first nests on Holden Beach were laid this weekend. On Saturday, May 18. the early morning rider found nest #1. And then if that wasn’t exciting enough, on Sunday two more nests and one false crawl was found. The season is off and running with a big start!

All three nests were left in place where the mother laid them. We can expect to see hatchlings from these nests in mid to late July.

Holden Beach is a turtle sanctuary—that means a safe place for sea turtles. Please remember to turn off all ocean facing lights each evening, fill in any holes you may dig on the beach and bring all equipment in each evening—these all can be hazards and distract the mother turtles as they make their way onto the beach to lay their eggs.”

“Yahoo, TODAY is our Day! 2024 HB Turtle Season is officially on! A lovely lady mamma sea turtle selected Holden Beach to lay our first nest of 2024 sometime after dark. Our early morning rider discovered our first treasure on the west end shortly after sunrise and one of our trusty teams was sent out to confirm the finding. Mission accomplished, our mamma selected a perfect location, safe and high very near the dunes so the nest was left in place. Well done all, glad to get this party started!

“Just a REMINDER‼️ The Summer concerts begin this Sunday at 6:30pm. 🚨 THEY WILL NOT BE AT THE PAVILION UNDER THE BRIDGE. ❌ I believe the temporary location is at Bridgeview Park. This is located where the courts and splash pad are. 🎵”

Well folks, the sun has set on our 2023 nesting season. Our last nest was inventoried and closed out yesterday and our hard-working volunteers are taking a little break. This season we had 6252 hatchlings emerge! We hope to see a few of those return in about 30 years to lay their own nests. The turtle patrol will be monitoring beaches for any turtle emergencies all year so keep our stranding number to call us if you spot any injured turtles. 910-754-0766.
