Fill in your holes! These 4 hatchlings were found by Holmes Beach Code Enforcement this morning. They were stuck in the hole using up energy they need for their long swim to the floating sargassum line where they will spend the next few years. You can prevent this! Fill in your holes and spread the word that by filling our holes and leaving the beach flat, we can all help share the beach with sea turtles!

“Holey” Moley! The nesting loggerhead turtles have been coming in strong this week on Anna Maria Island—Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch & Shorebird Monitoring, AMITW reports seeing a total number of 48 nests so far this season. They also report noticing a lot of large holes made by beachgoers and would like to kindly encourage everyone to please fill their holes and level their sandcastles when they leave to create a flat beach, preventing turtles from getting stuck.

Anna Maria Island has something to cheer about!
Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch spotted a colony of least terns nesting on Anna Maria Island — the first such colony since 2021. As of May 9, there were four nests and 10 individual birds.
Least terns are a state-designated threatened species — previous colonies have failed because of the presence of cats and crows. So people must stay away from the nests and keep pets away from nesting areas.
AMITW volunteers will monitor the site over the next several weeks as the eggs will take about 21 days to hatch.
