We are sad to share our house mascot, Poncho, has passed away. He brought smiles to the faces of everyone he met. RIP Poncho❤️ “Two weeks ago today, my buddy Poncho crossed the rainbow bridge. He was 55 years young❤️ Poncho’s presence was woven into every mundane moment of my life. In the morning hours, as the sun began to rise, I would hear him quietly preening for the day ahead. I was always greeted with a wing stretch, followed by a rhythmic full body shake. Plumes of parrot dust would dance in the sunlight. He’d grind his beak as I’d acknowledge him, a sign of content, his inquisitive nature and expressive eyes always at the forefront. He’d join in for yoga practice, moaning and groaning with every transition. I shared my meals, my snacks, and my drinks with him. If he wanted something I had, he’d make it known, flapping his wings, ringing his cowbell, flinging his toys, and screaming his discontent. I sang with him. Every. Single. Day. His eyes would dilate with delight as you spoke to him. His responses varied- a grunt, a whisper, a hearty laugh, a newborn baby’s cry. He’d often mumble a sequence of words that sounded like nothing, yet had so much meaning at the same time. They were often followed by, “Do you want a cracker? Huhhh?!!?!” His tone and inflictions as he verbalized these words mimicked mine to a tee. His reactions were warm, and often delivered with gusto. His intelligence was undeniable. A consummate troublemaker, as most parrots are, his curious demeanor left love bites on trim, books, baskets, and the like. He LOVED head scratches-almost as much as food. Even with him not here, I am reminded of him everyday. 19 years with you was a blessing, Poncho. My sweet, goofy, cuddle bug of a yellow naped amazon. RIP my little green monster. I love you. I hope to never forget you. See you on the other side.✨🦜💛💚🙏🏻”

A recent tide pool exploration didn’t disappoint. These tiny hermit crabs are very active in the evenings and put on quite a show. They are so small they can be easy to miss👀🦀🐚😊

We have almost 200 types of crabs here in Hawai’i. This ‘a ‘ama crab, also known as the thin-shelled black crab, rock crab, or natal lightfoot crab resides at the tide pools out front. They prefer algae as their main food source, but are known to scavenge as well.
