Visitors to the McRiver State Game Sanctuary may have seen this bear named “Dusty”. Yesterday, I saw Dusty about 25 miles away in the Katmai Preserve fishing for sockeye.

Big news about the Proposed Pebble Mine today! The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that it has denied the Pebble Limited Partnership's Clean Water Act Section 404 permit application proposed Pebble Mine permit has been denied. This however is not the end of the story, now we must work on permanent protections for Bristol Bay.

A big heartfelt THANK YOU from the bears and myself to everyone who has been involved to stop this mine from happening.

I've been watching this bear named "Flapjack" do this for over decade now. He's at least 20 years old now, so I'm always very grateful for every summer I get to see him.

Happy Winter Solstice!

This winter the longest night of the year coincides with a big, beautiful full moon. It’s the first time since 2010 since the two have been less than 24 hours apart, and the last time until 2029.

Ever cautious, this female bear surveys the meadow below to be sure it is safe for her cubs to go down there. These cubs are referred to as "spring cubs" or "COYs" (cub of the year) and are about 6 months old now.

The season is off to a great start! Yesterday, we saw 10 bears, 1 fox and 2 wolves. Its been very warm in Katmai, sunny with temperatures getting close to 70 degrees. Here's one bear cooling off from the heat.

I believe that continued protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for current and future generations is in the best interest of our state and nation. Opening this special area to oil drilling is a highly speculative venture that involves environmental risks we should not be taking.
