Today marks the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, contrasting beautifully with the endless light we enjoyed during June's Summer Solstice. In Homer, Alaska, we experience only about six hours of sunlight on the winter solstice. It's a time for reflection, peace, and the subtle beauty of dimmed skies. 🌞🌌

Scenes from Kachemak Bay look a little different in late fall. This was taken in October, just as the snow began to blanket the tops of the mountains across the bay. 🏔️

October brings a dynamic rhythm to the bay—storms sweep through every few days, creating a stunning display of natural force and beauty. This is also when we start seeing a shift in wildlife: sea ducks like goldeneyes and white-winged scoters gather here, their presence a telltale sign of the coming winter. While they may be wary due to hunting season, it’s a crucial time for them and those who revel in the unique sportfishing opportunities that come with the cooler weather.

This photo was taken by .nature on an 8-hour Marine Tour this July. At this time, both red and Pink Salmon were returning to the waters of Kachemak Bay. Groups of Bald Eagles are commonly seen along the coastline, watching for fish caught at the surface.

Throwback to this spotlight on the subtle details with Jacques Georgy’s lens from our July 19, 8 Hour Exploring Seldovia Bay Tour. 🌊🐋 This captivating shot focuses on the dorsal fin of a humpback whale, a vital feature for identifying these majestic sea giants alongside their more commonly recognized tail flukes.

Here’s a proud moment for Captain Scott’s niece as she holds her first King Salmon, caught in the rich waters of Kachemak Bay. These fish, known for their size and taste, play a crucial role in our local ecosystem. King Salmon are not just sought after for their culinary value but also for their unique place in the lifecycle of our bay, maturing here before their upstream journey.

Tracing the remarkable journey of the Sooty Shearwaters! 🌊

These images showcases a Humpback Whale accompanied by hundreds of these remarkable seabirds just off Seldovia Point. 🐋🐦

Sooty Shearwaters are commonly seen in outer Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet in the summer months. They are one of the most widespread and numerous of all pelagic seabirds. They can swim deep underwater, flapping their wings for power.

Sooty Shearwaters nest in the Southern Hemisphere and migrate in vast numbers to the Northern Hemisphere, tracing a figure-8 journey that covers about 40,000 miles in a single year. Under optimal conditions, migrating Sooty Shearwaters may cover more than 1,000 miles in a single day. They pursue fish underwater and can dive as deep as 220 feet below the surface, using their wings to propel themselves.

Isn’t it fascinating how these birds can travel over 1,000 miles in a day? Have you ever witnessed such a natural spectacle? Share your stories with us!

🦅 Did you know the journey to adulthood for a Bald Eagle spans 5-6 years? The estimated age of the Bald Eagle in the photo is somewhere in the fourth year of its life cycle, a critical time of transformation. Bald Eagles that have not reached full maturity are known as immature, juveniles, or sub-adults, with their plumage stages varying widely depending on age, sequence, and timing. Factors like iris color and other markings are crucial in estimating their age.

This particular eagle showcases a mostly white head with dark flecks around the eye and forehead near the cere—the fleshy, bulbous area right above the beak. These details give us a glimpse into its growth and development.

🌿 Each sighting of these majestic creatures is a reminder of the resilience of nature. Witnessing their growth and changes up close is just one of the many wonders you can experience on one of our tours. Ready to see them in their natural habitat?
