Honoring Princess Kalaniani’ole during Women History Month🌺KIKOS Tours travels Kalaniani’ole Hwy, every day! 🌺❤️🌈

It is worth noting that Elizabeth Kahanu Kalanianaʻole, wife of Prince Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole, was a respected figure in her time. She hailed from a prominent Maui aliʻi family and married Kūhiō in a private ceremony on October 9, 1896, at the Anglican Cathedral.

Following the passing of Queen Kapiʻolani in 1899, Princess Kalanianaʻole was appointed President of the Kapiʻolani Maternity Home, a position she held until her passing in 1932.

Princess Kalanianaʻole was known for her exceptional hosting skills in both Honolulu and Washington, D.C., where her husband represented the Territory of Hawaiʻi in Congress from 1903 until his death in 1922. After Kūhiō’s death, she was appointed to the Hawaiian Homes Commission. Princess Kalanianaʻole established the Hawaiian Women’s Republican Auxiliary two years after women were given the right to vote, with the aim of educating women on political issues. She remained an active player in the Republican Party until her passing in 1932. After her passing, many of the furnishings in her home, including items inherited by her husband from his Aunt Kapiʻolani, were sold at auction.

However, one table of royal provenance was not sold at auction. Princess Kalanianaʻole gifted a table to her friend Marian E. Gibson as a parting present. In 1969, Marian donated the table to the Iowa governor’s mansion. The Governor graciously loaned the table to The Friends of ʻIolani Palace when requested in 1978. In 2000, lobbying by a Des Moines middle school class prompted the transfer of ownership from the state of Iowa to The Friends of ʻIolani Palace. The table can now be viewed in the Gold Room, so be sure to check it out on your next visit.
