Have you tried kalo/taro before?

Have you tried kalo/taro before?

Kalo (taro) is a main staple in the Hawaiian Islands and is literally a part of Hawaiʻi's roots. Upon birth, the firstborn son of Wākea and Papahānaumoku, Hāloanakalaukapalili, was buried a stillborn. After burying his body in the ʻāina (land) Hāloanakalaukapalili became the kalo that would continue to feed generations to come.

Kalo honors this close relationship between the Hawaiian people and the ‘āina. This interconnectedness is seen throughout Hawaiian culture. When growing and harvesting kalo, it takes community effort as well as natural resources from ma uka to ma kai for nine months – just like keiki (children). And when enjoying kalo at meals, especially in the form of poi, everyone taking part must be positive because negativity is not welcome around this sacred food.

Kalo reminds us to mālama our connections to place, what and how we consume, as well as how we give back to that which continues to feed us.

Hawaiian culture is rooted in oral storytelling. Kūkā (talking story) is a time to get together to reconnect and stay connected. It is a cultural responsibility to pass down these stories to future generations.
